Kia magentis auto,a good buy? - fray bentos
Greetings. Thinking of buying one of these to replace 7 year old Almera. Found a 55 plate,8000 miler at a main dealer for £5995. £1200-£1500 for the almera . Sounds a bargain. Is It?

Sell the Almera (assuming good condition) privately and then get a discount on the car.

The retained value of all larger Japanese / Korean cars is not good but if you keep it long enough then depreciation rate is not important. You would lose £6K on a new Mondeo in year 1 - the most you could lose is £6K in say 5 years - how long the car lasts is down to how well looked after the car was in the last year and is in the future.

By all reports the Magentis is well screwed together but does not appeal in the UK

Ask yourself what other large saloon you could get for this money and mileage?

Not a bad car, but not the best to drive, but likely to be reliable if you look after it.

If it was me, I would. Id hope its the top-spec model though.

Looking around there are N0 cars of any type with this spec. at this price! Nearest is a mondeo lx auto at approx. £9500.from ford direct. I dont actually need this size car but this price seems exceptionally low compared to other magentis'( a dealer nearer me want £9995! for one),and £1500 in px is £500 more than ive been offered locally.
I find it hard to resist a bargain, and I think this is one, unless of course, you know better.

Kia Magentis, is this not a Korean rebadged Mitsibushi , sure it has some connection with them.

HJ seems to rate them.

The newest one is a collaboration with Hyundai, but not sure about an 05 model.
Either way, not a bad car by all accounts.

Hyundai, if I recall correctly started off in this country with rebadged old shape Mitsubishi Lancers so there could be a connection with Mitsubishi, it certainly looks like their styling. On the same subject Proton, I believe, started off with what was going to be the new Mitsubishi Lancer a few years back but Mitsubishi decided it would clash with the then Carisma so sold it to Proton.
Kia Magentis, they seem great value for money.

Kia Magentis is in essence a rebadged Hyundai Sonata with IMO better styling. The Hyundai is itself heavily based on the Mitsubishi Galant (same or similar engines, transmissions etc).

All three cars have a good reputation for reliability in the US. Big Korean cars (at least the Hyundai/Kia ones) are generally very well put together and it's hard to see how they've managed it for the price. They're not the best to drive BUT this is due to the US suspension settings rather than any deficiency in the cars (the cars themselves have quite sophisticated suspension setups).

I've been tempted myself. There are only two things that would put me off a bit at the price:

1) Some of the trim still seems a wee bit plasticky, although at the price it's hard to complain (certainly the fit and finish, and the quality of the plastics, more than beat the typical supermini which this car is competing with price-wise).

2) The run-out models were selling for £7000 brand new from a dealer in North Yorkshire about a year ago.

There are no specific reasons not to buy one though (except that being a big lug of a car it's a bit thirsty, but no more so than any other of its size), and if you like them, I say go for it. I can't see the resale value at £6000 being any worse percentage-wise than a lot of other cars at that money.

Didn't notice they were offering £1500 for the old Almera, which is probably top book to be fair. £4500 balance on one of these? Sounds good to me, as long as you intend to keep it for a few years. Kia's image is on the up, more so than Hyundai, so resale is likely to be less difficult in years to come anyway.
