I apologise for stating the obvious! My insurance has just come up for renewal with a quote of £220. I went to Moneysupermarket and confused.com and got some quotes. To cut a long story short, I renewed with my existing insurer for £153, the only difference being I had changed an additional driver with a clean licence for one with 3 points and my voluntary XS is now £200 instead of £100. Protected no-claims, 180 days use in Europe ,courtesy car and legal insurance included. I was well pleased!

It ALWAYS pays to shop around, particularly for car insurance. Some insurance companies do recognise this and sometimes your current insurer can work out cheapest, but not often.
The internet search sites like confused.com (and others) make the process fairly easy.

I presented the results of confused.com to my broker, who talked to the insurer and came back to me matching the lowest price on the list, which was well under their renewal premium. And I didn't cheat, because I didn't want them to have any scope for saying that what I put into confused.com was different from what I had told them.

I always shop around at renewal time. The last two years, my renewal quote from More Than already beats any other quote, but I still ring them and say "to save me shopping around, what can you do with this quote to retain me". Knocked £20-25 off their already lowest quote both times.
Always pays to ask as well as shop around!

Most people shop around to find the cheapest insurance. If I were shopping around I would consider quality as much as (if not more than) price.

The insurance is the insurance - what needs to be considered is what else you are getting for the premium I suggest. Foreign use, courtesy car, legal assistance and how much XS etc. If my car is written off and I am 'insured' I am going to get paid out whoever I am insured with. There may be more, or less, hassle but you won't find that out until you claim!

Foreign use, courtesy car, legal assistance and how much XS etc.
Compensation for loss of eye, loss of limb, etc.
Etc, etc, etc ..............
