Hi all, I have a 1994 P106 diesel which makes a "knocking" sound when turning - this started quite some time ago but seems to have got worse recently. It's just passed an MOT without problems but I'm worried that this may be a safety issue - can anyone advise the likely source of the noise and whether it's worth fixing on a car of this age?
All advice gratefully received!

Sounds as if you've got a worn constant velocity joint (or joints). I would check the rubber boots at each end of the driveshafts to check whether any have split. If they have then grease can have escaped and dirt and water could have got in. If so you'll need a new rubber boot to replace the split one, clean out the bearing, apply fresh grease (you often get some supplied with a new boot).
If none of the boots have split, and they are firmly fixed in place, then it sounds like normal wear and tear. If they are not noisy in the straight ahead and gentle turning positions I would carry on using the car as it is bearing in mind its age. Try not to use full lock too much.
Eventually, when it gets so bad that it fails an MOT on them the solution will be to replace the offending driveshaft(s) but you will need to weigh up the pros and cons of spending money on an old car. It may fail on something else before then though.

I agree it sounds like cv joints but have to disagree on plan of action.
Firstly it needs investigating to ensure it is joints.
Second, if they are worn badly they may fail at ay time; ok if it is outside your house, potentially lethal if its at a busy junction.
Thirdly they should not to be too expensive to have sorted either by garage or a diy capable person.
Fourthly, it could be something else and needs assessing on its safety too if so.
Dont mean to frighten you, but prefer to see you safe and sound.

Janeo, You may find this thread on the 206 owners forum interesting as it gives others' views on your topic.

Yorkiebar, I agree that if Janeo follows your recommended course of action it would be the "safety first" approach, but cv joints usually make quite a racket before they eventually fail.

i think the important bit is usually. i have known cv joints to fall apart with no real warning at all.
1 example, a customer drove his car to me asking me to identify a noise that happened occasionally. We went for a 20+ mile test drive and heard nothing, (it was a proper test drive too). The cv joint fell apart as we were returning to his house as i turned into his street.
For the sake of an inspection by a local garage I still strongly advise getting them checked if not replaced.

Hello, can any one help me - i've got a pug 106 that occasionally makes a knocking sound when reversing only - never forwards is this the cv ball joints or something else?
Any help is appreciated.

i have a 1990 vw jetta and i have been experiencing the same knocking sound when turning. i replaced both outer CV joints and it hasn't helped at all? i'm haven't a clue what it can be. i'am also finding that the steering wheel shakes at 55mph+ its a bit scary like, but i can't see anything wrong and when other people drive the car to test it they can't hear the noise most of the time just like the other guy was saying.

A knocking soun on reversing only may be the exhaust system - check for signs (rust/shiny surfaces) , It could also be a the lower engine mounting (altho may give noises in 1st - more likely)...
