Easy way to test it: motorway speeds, ease off accelerator at about 70mph and push the button. If enabled will drop a gear. (At least it does in my experience)

the light comes on when you turn the ignition on starting then goes out, and when you press the button on top of the gear selector nothing happens gear wise or speed wise nor does the light come on, I have an omega with a sports box is there anything I could swap to see if it makes the vectra work

redcats,

This could stem from the other problem you've been having.

If the gearbox is in limp home mode, (as per your previous post), then the sports switch won't work either.

Or, it could simply be that the sports switch is duff. Either way, seek an autobox specialist to have your problems checked out.

it was only ever in limp mode for 30 secs one day when I set off other than that drives perfect

In that case, get the switch on top of the gearstick checked out.

can you get to the switch easy cos I could swap it with my omega which works and see if that is the prob

No idea how the Omega switch comes out, but IIRC, with the Vectra switch, you have to remove the gearstick surround, then disconnect the gearstick from the linkage - making sure not to damage the wiring going to the winter snowflake switch or the sports switch. Once the stick is removed you can insert something like a garden cane up through the inside of the gearstick from below and push out the switch. A multimeter connected to the switch should tell you whether it's working or not.

Refitting is the reverse of removal, as they say.
