Cheap to run (mpg, insurance, parts etc..) and reliable. Under £1000
Supermini: Corsa, Fiesta, Micra, 106, 205, Saxo and Punto, Polo.
Small family car: Astra, Civic, Corolla, 306, Accent, Xsara, Almera, Bravo.
Which one would you go for or would recommend from one of these? Not bothered about how it looks or drives. As long as it takes me from A to B that's all it matters. Its going to be a second car so would be used only round town.I'm 28 and I've got 3 years no claims bonus so insurance won't be a bit issue for me. It would be a big plus if it comes with power steering.

Purely as a work tool thats reliable, id say the Corolla every single time at that price. Second choice would be the Micra, third the Civic.

Thanks for your reply mate. I think 1.3 Corolla would be the best bet for me but let's see what others have got to say.

Just an added thought - your forum nick gave me an idea - what about a Mazda 121 or 323?
I have a Mazda 323 1.3 as a run around and for a 20 year old car, its superb and utterly reliable. Cost me £150 with T&T. Just a thought!

Micras are horrible but bullet proof - I drive one!

I've got V plate Mazda 323 and I just love it. Don't want to buy an old Mazda though because it won't be easier to find parts for it if something does go wrong. I really want a car which is common on roads because it means it'll be easier to find it in car scrap yards.

Look at Seat Cordobas. Horrible looking saloon, but mechanically a VW Polo hence cheapish spares from gsf etc. Most people dont know what they are!
Prices for lateish models about £1000 less than same year Polo! You could find a 1998/9 model for less than 1000£.
