Daughter is about to finish her post-grad year. Student (she knows who he is...) in his cups, decided to dance on the top of her immaculate, special edition Proton Sprint. Now has a nice range of dents on the roof - what can be done and will it cost the earth? Obviously she really does not want to claim on her insurance, as a 23 year old.

Tell him to pay up or it's the cops.

I'm sorry - a Proton "Sprint"!!
Some students.....grrrrr - deepwith
Pokes tongue out at Bill Payer .... but on second thoughts ..... which lotus developed engine did you have in your first car Bill? Yup, it looks like a boy racer car and handles very nicely but still should not have dents all over the roof cos some young man cannot hold his liquor!! ;~)

Get the twit to admit it, then get the money. If he denies it, have no pity.

Property damage is property damage even if done in 'high spirits'. It's a reason, not an excuse. The person is still responsible. I hope it's ex[ensive and I hope paying for it hurts. Damn idiot.
Some students.....grrrrr - Avant
Agree with Pugugly - and if the cops aren't interested then it's the small claims court.

Your daughter should get a couple of estimates from a body shop and present the lower one to the supposedly intelligent student - or maybe his parents if the college will supply his home address.
Some students.....grrrrr - local yokel
Don't bring yr daughter into directly into it. Get a quote (no need to shop around...), write a letter stating that payment is sought within 14 days. If not rec'd then use the online moneyclaim service. He may be graduating very soon, and then how will you find him?

The uni may not be prepared to release home /parents address claiming "confidientiality". If you can work out roughly where he comes from then 192.com will allow you to search the electoral roll.
Some students.....grrrrr - Sprice
Personally, I'd sort the student out.
Some students.....grrrrr - top turkey
As someone who works in a University, you certainly wouldn't expect them to give out contact addresses to any third party (even those callers claiming to be parents)...

However, if you know his course/Faculty and if he is in his final year, simply tell him that you will turn up and discuss the matter in person at his graduation if the matter is not sorted. Almost all universities will put their graduation dates and times on their website!

It reminds me that, maybe 20yrs or so ago, my MIL bought a Seat Ibiza that had Porsche written across the bottom of the doors (can't remember why - they'd had some input on the engine?).
She used to refer to the car as 'the Porsche thing'.

As its the roof. Yes it will cost a fortune to fix.

As you know who the person is, the report it to plod and insist they press charges for criminal damage.

And if he coughs up for this, as he should be made too, he will have an even bigger debt, hopefully that will make him and his peers "the future of this country of ours" think twice before being so damn stupid next time.

This is a common problem on the streets around Loughborough town centre. Students on the way back from a night out kick off wing mirrors, walk over cars or push wheelie bins into them.

As a car-owning student with a limited budget it can be very worrying, I have got off lightly losing only one wing mirror - I'm glad I don't own anything expensive enough to have electrics.
Some students.....grrrrr - local yokel
If you use the moneyclaim service he's got 28 days to pay on receipt of the judgement - and if he doesn't pay it'll be recorded on his credit file as a county court judgement, which will hinder his chances of loans, cards and mortgage.

I guess I'm a bit old fashioned, but I reckon that if a vandal is caught in the act, then the rest of society should not end up out of pocket. Last week some twerps damaged a sculpture in the local park and they were taken down to the nick and fined £80 each. Pathetically, this would not cover the the cost of wasted police time, let alone the cost of repairing the sculpture.

I've a belief that if people are made FULLY responsible for their actions and REALISTIC fines handed out, then they'll think twice in future. Who knows, it could have a knock-on effect and reduce higher level crime.

I bet if the bloke has to pay £500-600 for repairing the damaged car roof, he won't do it again! Looking on the positive side, it will help him to grow up.

Tell me about it!!

The damage toll while I was in Loughborough was;

Three lock sets for the Nova
A parcel shelf (The removable radio was in the boot clearly visible once the parcel shelf was taken, but they didn't want that!)
My motorbike got completely burnt out
tyres let down on the Nova twice

I think that it's a brave, or foolish type who leaves his car between town and University near Ashby Road, Forest Road or the network of streets between them on a Friday or Saturday night.

Since moving away from Loughborough, (touching wood!), no problems!

On the positive side, I got a good degree, and met SWMBO there!

First things first before jumping the gun?

Confront the student and actually ask him what if anything he intends to do about the damage he caused first? He may be genuine enough to actually be prepared to try and sort something before heavier action follows?

If he not prepared to do anything then take further action; I would suggest criminal damage via police because if he has no money and you get him to a court or a judgement against him you will not get anything anyway!

But give him the cahnce to sort his actions? we would all expect to be given that chance if we had done anything that caused damage; intentional or not?
Some students.....grrrrr - Lud
Quite right robcars. He may come clean if confronted and be decently sorry. Time enough to get nasty if he doesn't.
Some students.....grrrrr - deepwith
Thanks for response. Getting quotes this week then will give them to young man to give him chance to do the decent thing before getting heavy moneywise. Will report back later with what happens. Daughter (post!!) graduates on the 23rd so will endeavour to actually meet him - and let him know my feelings - then.

Politeness pays.
Point out to the miscreant that his actions have left you (your daughter?) out-of-pocket, and that while we all enjoy a bit of hi-jinx occasionally, fun is fun, but vandalism is another story.
Also point out that a criminal damage/vandalism charge against him will hang over his head for a long time, and really scupper his career chances.

I thought it was a local's car, and I don't dig the local's jive, cos, like, obviously we're the only generation ever to go to university and ordinary local people with, like, jobs are losers. Even if they went to Uni as well. cos we're like young and misunderstood and that's what matters"

Etc. ad nauseum till the little scrotes graduate and then turn into ruthless "graduate trainee scheme" career junkies.

And yes, I was a student. I hated them then, and I hate them now!

Oh, that's OK then.

Forget the money. Here, have this damn good punch in the face instead, and while you spit a few teeth, and try to stop the bleeding, reflect on the fact that it is just another example of being misunderstood.

Won't do it again, will you?

You're not wrong - I have to remain brave and foolish one more weekend - mine's 2 roads away from Ashby. Sadly as all the 1st and 2nd years who really can't handle their drink are finishing their exams, it's likely to be the riskiest weekend of the year!
