Can any one give me a good reason why a part for a renault van (new shape)is often a great deal more money than for a vauxhall?, despite the fact that they are both made by renault the only difference being the badgeing. yet another example of rip off pricing from the manufacturers. i can see no justification for a huge price hike just because it has a renault badge,my advice is buy the vauxhall and save a huge amount of money on parts!!The price difference for identical parts(the vauxhall parts even carry renault markings!)is often obscene.

Wonder what the Nissan price was?

Its the same with everything, the product is not what you are paying for, its only a tiny part of the purchase price. Many prices are just created, as that is what the consumer will pay.

Some people even pay huge amounts for water in a bottle you know !

Seems odd that they'd do this with a commercial vehicle as well. Businesses are much less inclined to throw good money away than consumers, so I'd have thought commercial pressures would have got to Renault.

It's not even as if Renault is seen as a classier brand than Vauxhall -- if anything it's the other way around.

I find Renault parts extremely reasonable, cheaper that Halfords part for part.

This has been going on for years - when needing parts for my peugeot 106 i always phone the pug and citreon dealer and see which is cheaper for the relevant part. I've also bought parts for a seat from a seat dealer and the part has turned up in a VW box.

When my mate ordered a towbar for his Skoda Octavia estate, the bloke behind the counter told him that it was a good choice - the same one in an Audi box cost twice as much!

I can concur with the adage that once you've been 'in marketing', you see the world differently. The chap above who mentioned bottled water is spot on!

You do not have to go to different Franchises to get a bargain / ripped off.

A few years back when engines were shared between Toyota Diesel Commercials and 4x4 the price of the same item varied depending on which part # you quoted at the parts desk.

If the storeman was in a good mood he sold you the less expensive one.

You have not obviously bought a clutch master cylinder for a Laguna 11,or a heater resister block or back axle bushes or a xenon headlight or rear light lense or a set of glow plugs or a set of rear wheel discs.Renault makes Dick Turpin look like a philanthropist.

Anyone who thinks Renault parts prices are reasonable has more money than sense.
Renault parts have always been very dear. They have a deal with their suppliers whereby the cost of components to the factory is very low (Renault have amongst the lowest build costs in the industry) but then they allow their suppliers to charge a much higher price to the parts distribution network.

Just been quoted £184.95 + vat for MAP sensor for 98 clio 1.2 8v, phoned Fuelparts and their price is about £40 with vat!! Apparantley, this part is shared with GM models as well so would be cheaper than renault.

I agree - total rip off. The coil I had to buy from them was £80 - Eurocarparts was £25, but I had to get the Renault one as mine has slightly different connectors on it :o( Was gutted at having to pay 3 times as much.....Will not buy another Renault.

The first time I had a Renault was the B Reg 11GTL.

I was shocked at the prices charged for those and very quickly built up a network of non genuine, plus I worked for a while for Express Factors - the staff discount seemed to apply to some favoured ex staff as well ;).

Now I own a Nissan (Renault Trafic). I haven't yet had to order parts. The first service is due very shortly and my wallet is at the moment receiving pre loss coucelling. However, I did source some Genuine Renault brake pads for my previous Renault trafic, that were alledgedly for a Vauxhall Arena. Total E bay price came in at £10. Normal cost is £40 plus.

The day I bought the new van from a Nissan/Renault dealership I went to the parts dept and asked if the pads would by any chance fit the new van. The parts manager took the box, inspected the new pads and produced another box, saying "Those won't but these will, and they're the same price" He assured me that the garage use plenty of the Arena pads, and was therefore happy to swap them for a set for my new vehicle.

So, I now have a new set of pads ready for my van when I need them. They are for a Nissan Primastar, housed in a Renault box but probably say they are for a Vauxhall Vivaro!

Remember original Discovery - tail lamp cluster, sourced from Maestro van... this item actually decided the side body style, from the waistline contours, generated, by following the curves of this parts bin, item!

Headlamps from LDV Sherpa, too!!

& some switchgear, door handles, speedo binacle......

No doubt different prices, once the Land Rover packaging appeared!!

If i remember rightly weren't the door handles on the original Range Rover off something like a morris ital?

And what about all the ford stuff used on TVR's - i bet they mark things up a bit compared to a ford dealer.

Of course BMC insisted on using the doors from the 1800 in a number of subsequent designs. I think the Maxi, the 3 litre, the Australian Tasman/Kimberly sixes, and perhaps something else as well, were the ungrateful recipients.

Parts price differences also exist in the Ford/Mazda group. Australasian Mazda 626s are also Ford Telstars, 323s are Lasers etc. Interestingly, the Mazda part is often cheaper than the Ford equivalent.

The classic Jaguar fraternity have suffered from this 'halo' effect for years. An extensive library of equivalent part numbers has been compiled that helps cut the cost of maintaining such a car. I recently required a fuel pressure regulator for my V12. The Jaguar dealer price was around $250. The same item sourced from Bosch was around $100.

The only real solution is to join together with other owners in a club, or e-mail group, so that the information about parts equivalents is kept available and current.
