What size of job or specail tooling is required to do the 60K cam belt and tensioner change on this vehicle. Any idea what a main dealer would charge for this. Regards Peter

several specialist pieces of kit required, a crankshaft lock, camshaft lock and tool to rotate and set the tensioner. Not a job for the novice. Cant give you exact times as my laptop is in for surgery but I would guess at around 2-2.5 hours plus the cost of the belts guide and tensioner, say around £350-£400 at £85 ph labour rate.

Thanks Andrew, I am no novice that's for sure but the locks I am not aware of so will do more work to find out more. Not bought the car yet but soon I think. Thanks Peter

I know it's not quite the same, but the cambelt change on my Seat 1.9 TDi 115PS was £420 at the main dealer. Also it was done at 40k and not 60k as the handbook suggests (see HJ's thread in the Discussion area). It may be worth you ringing other VAG group dealers - Skoda and SEAT - as they may offer better labour rates than your local VW dealer and will have the experience and tools to work on the engine.

The PD tools are about £80 from Sealey.

The diesel pump timming need re-setting with VAG.COM or similar after the belt's been off. Otherwise it won't start very quickly afterwards.

Its timed off the camshaft.
