Currently a named driver in my own car on my mum's policy. All above board, approved by insurance company. I'm now 21 and have been driving for 3 years, so thought about getting a quote for my car. (1998 Citroen Xsara 1.9TD)

Tried First Alternative - told them I had no NCD, had no accidents in last 5 years or penalty points, and drive 5000 miles per year, with the car on the driveway in Devon. Cheapest quote (with 250 pound excess and no other options, and a 10% online discount) was...

...wait for it...

TWO THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY SIX POUNDS

Will be driving on my mum's policy for a bit longer yet!

I was going to suggest you tried Direct Line. They have been advertising that named drivers qualify for NCD. However that is only when you have been a named driver on a Direct Line policy. From the FAQ:

Q: Am I eligible for a Named Driver No-Claim Discount?

A: You are eligible for a Named Driver No-Claim Discount if you are a named driver on a current Direct Line policy (not the policyholder) for over 12 months and subject to your claims history.

Try them anyway, they were streets ahead of any other for my kids' insurances...

Oddly after using these two sites I still got a better quote for my 20 yr old son from Liverpool Victoria - might be worth a try.

My 21 year old Niece and, for that matter, all her girl-friends, have all insured their cars with Tesco.

Interstingly enough, girls actually get better insurance quotations than similarly aged males because they are reconned not to "show off" when driving as some males of this age might be inclined to do.

Good luck and do keep trying......It certainly pays to shop around

I wonder whether CIS would match their policy, as that's who I'm with now. Might give them a ring tomorrow.

At the same age (1984), in London, with no NCD and four years in my dad's car, it was £250 for my Mini 850 (parked on the street in Tottenham). I appreciate prices have increased, but that sounds a bit ridiculous.

And we wonder why young men drive with no insurance?

Admiral get my vote everytime. £1000 vs £2000 from every other company.
Insurance heart attacks - Bill Payer
Yep, Admiral were cheapest for my 21yr old daughter.
Put your Mum on as a named driver - that reduces the premium with Admiral (assuming her licence is clean - they don't like any kind of licence blemishes).
Insurance heart attacks - Roberson
Same here too. NU wanted £990 for my second year (same amount they charged me for my first year!) Admiral: £750. This year (my third year behind the wheel) they managed to get it down to £595*

Some other companies were a little cheaper but had massive excesses.

I insured my wife's car for several years with CIS because they're one of the few companies that still did any driver any age policies (on lower insurance group cars) and it was the cheapest way of getting the kids on the insurance.
I also liked their very straightforward policy, and the protected NCD allowed unlimited claims. We claimed once, for a small bump, and it was all handled very well.
I don't maind paying £50 or even £100 for peace of mind, but last year their renewal quote was just ridiculous - £750 vs £350 with Liverpool Victoria (Frizzell), although LV wouldn't do any driver under 25. I rang up and pleaded with CIS but to no avail. So we're now insured with LV.

NU have been, by far and away the cheapest for me since my first year.

A young guy on my Institute of Advanced Motoring training course found his premium reduced from (?) thousands (?) to some sensible level, like six hundred quid, after he had passed his advanced test.
I realise that without remebering the actual numbers, this may sound like a bald and unconvincing statement, but the point is that he found it well worthwhile.
Probably make you a better driver , as well.
And it's not difficult. Sunday morning driving sessions for 12 weeks, then a test.
Do it.
You know it makes sense.

I have been with LV for years; 70 or perhaps 75% protected no-claims and I ring around whenever I get the renewal but nobody else comes close or the XS is higher if they match the premium.

David, don't worry about paying over 2 grand, I was in the same boat as you nearly 6 years ago, got caught (in the end) driving with no insurance and got £150 fine. Quids in.

And yes before everyone starts slating me yes I was young and foolish (and would rather spend money on beer than insurance) I have since matured into a socially respectable young adult. Ahem.

How much did having a 'no insurance' offence code on your licence affect your premiums, once you actually started to pay?

My first car at the age of 18 was a 2 litre mondeo. The insurance came in at £2000 (car valued at £2000) this was with direct line.

Since this I have progreesed to my present vehicles, 8 year old trooper, 4 year old transit and two year old mondeo.

Stupidly the insurance is highest for the isuzu at £1000 with the car and van at £500 each. This is calculated with 2 no fault claims and three penalty points ( ofence code Ts10 trafic light)

The mondeo is restricted to 8000 miles a year domestic use, the trooper is redgisterd as business and pleasure and the van is LGV.

Billpayer, IIRC it would have bumped it up by about £100 (£750 versus £850) if I had chosen to tell them about it at the time, and no, I chose not to tell them and they never found out. No have a clean license and intend to keep it that way as best I can, thankfully West Mercia traffic police seem virtually non existant.

I'm with CIS, and have been for a very long time. They are very reasonable, and don't resort to underhand loadings. Everything is open and above board. At one time (I don't know whether it still applies) you could calculate the premium yourself by obtaining their prospectus. Every factor was given a number of points. You added up all the points and then looked in a table for the premium for that number of points and the insurance group of the car.
I can recommend them.

There's no point getting one quote and giving up. First Alternative clearly don't have you in mind as a customer. You need to check as many different insurance companies as you can get hold of, until you find one that IS aiming at your market sector.
I'm due for renewal at the moment on my Fiat Coupe and the insurers quotes from confused.com ranged from £500 to £1700.
Incidentally, I disagree with people who claim that confused.com are 'the answer' for searching for insurance. They're probably worthwhile as a starting point to see what sort of money you're talking about, but in 10 years of getting car insurance they've never come within £100 of getting me the cheapest quote.

BazzaBear. You should try elephant for your Fiat. Although I am a fair bit older than you, they came in far cheaper than Direct Line (2nd cheapest) for my Fiat. This meant I increased my cover and for less money.

I'm currently with Privilege, who have provided a great service in various ways, so I'm keen to stay with them.
I got the renewal notice through yesterday, so tried a few online quotes (including Elephant, as it happens) I think Elephant were the cheapest, at about £40 less than Privilege, so my next task is to ring Privilege and ask them if they'll match it. If they won't, I'll still consider staying with them, as I say, they've been good.

IMO there is no substitute for scouring the 'net yourself for an insurance quote. Most of the one stop shop sites couldn't match what I found myself when I was looking for car insurance for my 19 yr old son. Definitely try Admiral. £1300 for a 19yr old driving 12000 miles a year in a 54 plate astra 1.6 sxi, fully comp. However this is for 10 months as he is on a "bonus accelerator". At the end of 10 months he moves to 25% no claims bonus then insures for 12 months after that. Nearest competitor wanted £1800 for 12 months (Virgin).

Two years? I find that very hard to believe. In fact, when I used them for a quote this time, they came up with a list of quotes I'd got with them previously and one of them was for a car I haven't owned for nearly 5 years.

Makes me wonder about the validity of our company lease car scheme. I have 3 points from 2002 and a crash also in 2002, so I am back up to 3 year's NCB and they want 600 quid for a Skoda Fabia vRS. I am 33, and in a very low risk insurance area. We have a "choice" of 2 insurers, both as expensive as each other. Am seriously considering opting out, but the monthly fee is such a bargain...
Insurance heart attacks - Stuartli
The point made earlier in the thread about searching for insurance quotes directly with companies such as Direct Line is the method I use.

Admiral, Confused, Elephant etc are all brokers and, as is obvious, make their income through commission.

There is therefore really no true incentive to attempt to discover the best as well as the cheapest insurance cover for you, even if each was able to contact every possible insurance source.

Just as a test key in your details with each of the brokers and see just what each comes up with. You'll be surprised at the variations.

I wonder if thats as scary, as when some us older Broomers, had our first policies??

18 & no blemishes, but my year of motorcycle cover, might have = some discount, £165 was a years cover on a Vauxhall Victor 101 - 1.6.

I was earning £20/week, so 8 weeks wages, covered the insurance cost. If you're on £250+/week, nothings changed, in real terms!

But still a big lump of £$£$ to find!!

Welcome to the world of car ownership ....& an empty wallet!!

Agree with Vansboy. TPTF for my first car was circa £300 in 1980, which at that time equated to 3 months salary. Insurance is probably no more expensive than it ever has been, its just that the numbers are bigger.

In defence of confused.com I recently used their site and saved £200 on my quote from directline (who provided the best quote for 4 years on the trot). I've never had a good quote from Tesco, Elephant or More Than.

At the grand age of 24, with 6 years no claims, 15K/year mileage (business, commuting and social), I pay £220/year! Woohoo!!!!

.....shame about the car I insure...a 2003 diesel Mitsubishi Carisma. :-(

The sad thing is that I can insure a two year old impreza or Evo for the sort of money you've been quoted. My advice is get your own policy started as it's worth it in the long run.

I'm not sure what's going on with car insurance these days, when I got my own car and my first policy in 1998, I was paying £666 (yes, really) for a D reg 1.3 Golf. I can only assume it's due to newer cars with higher values being insured? I heard that some 18 year olds are paying £2k to insure a 1.1 Saxo!

I was 20 when I got my 4 year old rover 214 living in Middlesbrough (TS1 postcode--ouch!) at uni and paid £900 under my own policy through direct line (tesco price was identical at the time). Now 24 until about an hrs time anyway and use elephant to insure my Rover 75 and pay around £500 a year, thats with business class, 25K a year, breakdown cover, legal expenses and fully comp. Now live in much nicer area but direct line wanted well over £1000 mark!

Only thing with Elephant is the 10 month policy but does build up your no claims quicker. It may be worth asking if you can transfer maybe a years no claims over as I was insured under my mum when in first and second year at uni (paying £220 on a nasty micra) and they transferred 1 year over because there was no claims made - saved around 15% off initial premium and add that to an online discount and it adds up.
