Does anyone know what the CAP/glasses values are for a clean 110k 1997 R 406 estate 1.8 LX with AC are? I bought one at auction for £750 and I phoned the previous owner to get some more background info, turned out he got £350 part exchange for it. He wasn't best pleased! I thought I did quite well

Reevsie,
We traded in our 406 1.8 A/C estate 99 on a T reg, facelift in August. 93K miles, immaculate, fsh, one owner, we managed to get £1200 against a £13K sale, but dealer then advertised it for £900!! I think you maybe payed slightly OTT for a 97. Even Glass guide prices don't mean much in today's market.
They are a great buy if you get a good one; run it till it drops, good luck.

The one i got is a one owner car. It has recent dunlops all round, got service history, aircon works, brakes are recent so i went for it. Figured I would be paying double if I bought it privatly. I looked at autorader for several weeks looking for honda aerodecks, peogeot and mondeo estates between m & r reg all asking between £1200 & £1700. I was surprised to find that after enquiring about a dozen local cars I was told that the vehicles had already sold. Thats why in the end I went to the auction. It was my first time and I found the auction quite enjoyable. I will go armed with a Glasses guide next time though, parkers prices seem miles out.

Parkers is totally irrelevant to today's marketplace. I must have looked at 50-100 cars in the last 3 months, and Parker's was never really close to any of the prices.

Sounds like you got a good one Reevsie. Hope it proves reliable.

A garage has a minimum selling price in mind when it prices the car. Bought at £8,600 advertised at £10,000 but really would accept £9,500 say.
When you buy / when the garage sells the car it is
Selling Price less Trade-in that is important - nothing to do with the car cost £XXXX and the trade in was £YYYY.
In the case of the 406 part exchange:-
Buying in a trade-in at £1200 and selling at £900 makes great sense for a garage if they sold the new car at £13,000 but really wanting say £12,200 - they made £500 more than their minimum for a deal on that particular car.
