Mondeo TD no power - ShineOnYouCrazyDiamond
Hi. I have a 97 Mondeo TD 1.8.

I've not owned a diesel before so I dont know a great deal about them.

My car, for a 1.8 TD, feels sluggish (like no real power for a 1.8 td).
When I've had 1.8 or 2.0L petrol cars before thay are much faster.
Is this normal on a older TD, or might there be a problem?
If so, whats the most common thing on the Mondeo TD like this and how do I get the power back?

Cheers.

Between 2200 & 4000 rpm. it should go well any gear.

Older turbo diesels such as yours do tend to suffer from what is known as 'turbo lag' below 2000-2500 rpm, which is where insufficient exhaust gas is being produced to spin the turbo fast enough to give the engine more power. Hence, as the above post suggests it should go pretty well when the revs are above 2200 ish rpm. If not then the turbo may not be working as it should, possibly because of a split in one of the turbo pipes, which will obviously need investigating.

On the front of the injection pump there's a circular, tin-covered, pressure capsule. Attached to it is a small rubber hose that feeds pressure round from the inlet manifold. Check that it isn't split [there'll be oilness on it if it is.] The diaphragms in that pressure capsule can split too; but that's harder to see.

Has it always been the same? Has anyone "fiddled" with the settings to blag an MOT pass? Check that the throttle cable gets full movement on the pump arm when the pedal's down on the floor. Pump/cam timing [belt] issues and "adjustment" of the fuelling screw and the pressure capsule's balancing screw can't be ruled out either.

A visit to a competant diesel specialists for a full check and tune-up will usually pay for itself quite quickly!

I have the same car, 96 vintage.

Worth checking that it isn't something simple first, as it was in my case. I gradually began to notice a loss of power which eventually became so bad it was embarrassing to drive. I thought I might be facing a hefty bill, but it turned out to be a dodgy throttle cable which was in the process of seizing up. There was no notchy feeling and in daily use I hadn't noticed the extra pressure needed on the pedal.

The dealer who supplied the new cable reckoned it was a common fault on these.

You'd expect them to reset after you get the bit of paper tho'.

No one has messed with it to pass an mot. I took it about a month ago and it failed on one small problem that was soon fix.

There is another problem with the car (whether this has anything to do with it i've no idea.)
When you start to car you have to leave it running 5-10 minutes to warm up as it will not go into 2nd gear while the car is moving. Once it warms up it slides into gear as it should.

(I'm making my car sound a right bucket:-)
