My partner and I have two insurance policies and one car. Mine is for the car we both use and his is used at the moment for his daughters' car. If we cancel his/my policy and then (sometime in the future) buy another car, do we have to have two policies if the cars are registered in both our names?

keep both policies going to keep the ncb and yes if you buy another car you will need two policies
it is also technically illegal to insure your daughter/son on your policy if you are named as the main driver but arent,so be careful if they live away from home etc

Many thanks for your info.

Using his policy to insure his daughter's car is not, in itself, wrong but it can cause difficulties.
Firstly you must declare accurately who is the main user. And you cannot wait to be asked, you must volunteer the information.
Secondly you must ensure that the insurance company are aware whose name the vehicle is registered in.
If you do not do those two things then you run the risk that not only will a claim for your own damage be refused, claims made by other people (third parties) and settled by your insurance company may be forcibly recovered from you.
In addition your insurance would be cancelled, future insurance declined, and it would become expensive and difficult, verging on the impossible, to obtain insurance.
In other words, don't do it. You may well get away with it, lots of people do - but if you do get caught its nasty....
You do not have to have two insurance policies. Many insurers are more than happy to take more than one vehicle on a policy. It is worth ensuring that you retain proof of bonus from the cancelled policy, and bear in mind that another insurer may only accept this for about two years, after which you'll be back to scratch - although then you would be in the world of advantageous introductory discounts which aren't so different from bonus levels.
