Hand free kit - DaveKent
Hi. I bought a 97 Mondeo a while back and it has an original nokia hands free kit in it. Looks like its all been fitted by a professional.
The cradle for the phone is for a nokia 6310 mobile phone.

What I would like to know is can I just swap the cradle over to an up to date one, or would it need all replacing?

Many thanks,

Dave

Go to the thread - "I have a question Vol 80" and look for my name. I asked the same question and got a lot of answers. Also, I bought an O2 branded cradle adapter which works for Nokia 6020/1 and 6230. Its OK, but I have gone back to the 6310 which is a better phone.

They have started producing the 6210 (same as the 6310 but older model) again - at least my electrican has a new one.

It depends on the phone, you have the CARK-91 kit, and this company has an adapter kit for a few nokia's

The cradle mentioned above is the one I bought. Its fine, but much easier with the 6310 and basic kit, as it has a separate aerial which the 6310 connects into when in the cradle.

I would buy the CARK91 off you if you took it out.

When I fitted my Nokia CK-7W Advanced Bluetooth Carkit to my 99 Mondeo I found the guy who owned the car before me, from new, had a CARK-91 fitted at some point. Thus, all the looms were in place and the new kit just plugged in. Took less than 10 minutes to install!

So, I'd recommend one of these, only 70 quid, all you need to do is just get in the car with the phone in your pocket, in your bag, wherever, and it automatically connects to the car and routes the incoming call through your stereo, muting it as well.

I think I have most of the bits of an old CARK-91 in a plasic bag in the garage. You could have it for free.

The 6310i is a great phone, bluetooth etc, there are possibly still some new ones around or a good 2nd hand one could probably be got via Carphone Warehouse.

I think Which may be on its own. Friends who have them find them very robust, and they have very good battery life -- much better than most newer phones. I'm sure that's why many corporates made them the default phone for their staff.

I support the view of how good the 6310i is. Much better than any of the newer products, better battery life and bigger keys! easier to use in the car.

I have recently bought 3 CARK91 kits to install in my cars and a very respectable s/h (looks like new) 6210 for SWMBO so swapping cars is easy. Great value from Ebay, the 6210 was £22, the CARKs between £12 and £20 (the most expensive was BIB) with all parts needed.

I keep the little modern phone that O2 insist on giving me as my spare with a French PAYG sim in it. Just swap it over when I am away.

Sorry NW - and others - you are right and I am wrong. My IIRC was incorrect, the phone that Which? that referred to as - not very robust - was the Nokia 6230 (NOT the 6230i)

Apologies, 100 lines, I must be more careful in future.

I refuse to change my 6310i. It is robust, good sound quality, excelent signal quality, superb battery life, and its just the right size. Couple this to the Nokia car kit and its a perfect car phone.

One of my friends gets annual upgrades on her phone, and accepted them as long as she could still persuade em to give her one of those -- her old phones were passed on to partners and friends. Now that they won't give her another, she declines the upgrades.

Just as an aside, you can sometimes get some money off your monthly bill if you decline an upgrade. SWMBO did, with O2.

Now I have a 6230 and the wife has a 6230i, the former is more straight forward to use and the latter has a better camera (if you want such a thing on a phone) however IMO neither is as good as my old 6310i's or the 6130 I had before those.

If anyway is after a new car kit that is flexible check out the THB Bury line. It's German and the previous versions from years ago were poor I'll admit. But the Universal System 8 version is brilliant in all respects.

You get a proper wired car kit for your phone and a holder. Except you can swap phones with a new cradle or even opt for the Bluetooth "cradle".

After lots of previous THB kits (company provided) the latest is so much better with total flexibility. Better than say Nokia because you could get say a Siemens, Sony/Ericsson or Motorola holder. Or even for a phone/PDA combo. Check out www.handsfreewarehouse.co.uk/browse_products.asp?c...7 for holders.

My company put in the kit for the 6310i but got a holder for my 6230 (now 6230i) from Handsfreewarehouse and got excellent service.

Choose new phones wisely and you'll not need a new car kit or holder even.

Thank you all for the help. Much appreciated.

Espada, I wouldnt like to take it out myself as I wouldnt have a scoobydoo!! You would probably end up with half the alarm system :-)

I might look out for a cheap nokia 6310 (or whatever phone also fits that cradle).
If anyone knows of one going cheap please let me know... linskeydvd@aol.com

Cheers again for the help.

Dave

Has anyone any experience of Jabra Bluetooth Handsfree Car Kit SP500 as seen at:

tinyurl.com/dz39z

a friend is looking for presents for his friends and is running out of ideas! If this is any sort of decent unit, then he might be tempted. Or any other suggestions for under £50 for bluetooth handsfree - they don't like the ear ones!
