MAF for Nissan QX 3.0 - Gazza
Nissan quoted me £580 inc. VAT for a MAF sensor which I thought was too expensive. I went to two of the motor factors in East London (E14) and neither of them have the MAF available and suggested main dealer.

Can anyone suggest where to get the MAF cheaply?

Many thanks,

First of all, are you really sure you need one of these? Have your tried cleaning it with brake cleaner and checked the wiring? Unless you have been using an oiled air filter (like a K&N) they don't usually go wrong.

If you're sure you need one then try to get a secondhand one from a breakers first. The Nissan part number is 22680-31U05 - the same unit is used on all 2.0 and 3.0 QX's. It is also used on Nissan Patrol with the 2.8 engine made from October '97 onwards.

You might also want to try BBA-Reman, InjectionCorrection and/or ATP Electronics in Hednesford.

Failing all that then it might be cheaper to buy one in from Japan. Someone like Parts Direct might order one if you give them the VIN number.

If you do replace it then I wouldn't mind having your old one to pull apart and take a look at - to see how it failed.

The situation was for, during the last few days, when I drove out of Rotherhithe Tunnel (the really narrow one in London near Canary Wharf), the car suddenly loss power. Every time the car just losses revs and stalled. Once I managed to catch it in time, put it in neutral and full throttle to keep the engine going. Obviously this was not a good thing to do in a very busy, narrow tunnel with speed limit of 20mph, a uphill exit and a potential to roll backwards. I have tried to left-foot-brake and keep the throttle open but sometimes this does not appear to be enough.

No fault code, with the exception of the knock-sensor which had been there since last year and you said I could ignore the knock sensor one. Always used Nissan air filter, not oiled air filter.

I'll try to do a component check as per the pdf manual to see it the MAF is giving out the correct voltage.

On another note, would you like to have a look at my failed rev counter?

Your problem doesn't really sound like a MAF sensor fault. MAF sensors usually go bad on a permanent basis and the symptom is blunted acceleration and lack of power at higher RPM.

You are describing some other kind of intermittant problem. I would be looking at fuel supply (pump, pump relay or wiring) or possibly ignition fault (intermittant failed coils). The fact that it happens under the same circumstances - i.e. an upward facing slope, makes me think it could be a connector/wiring problem somewhere.

With parts the price that they are nowadays you really can't afford a 'poke and hope' approach. I would note the exact circumstances under which you get this problem and take the car for some proper diagnostics.
