Tax disc problems - any ideas? - peterb
I renewed Mrsb's insurance on Friday pm and was told the documents would be posted 1st class.

They still hadn't arrived today and the AA said they hadn't been posted until Monday.

The problem is, I need to renew the tax disc and the AA reckon a faxed copy of insurance won't count.

I'm now worried in case the insurance doesn't come by Saturday! Any ideas?

Peter

PS I've tried the online service and it didn't work.

The AA are correct, the faxed copy will not suffice in the PO.

When I bought my new van the broker Commercial Vehicle Direct actually sent the cover note by special delivery for £5.

This is guaranteed to get there the next day.

See if the AA will do it for you (FOC if they've muched you around)

As for the tax, I think I read somewhere here that they are lenient for the first month. Don't quote me on that, someone will be here to add more soon no doubt - DVD your Q.

You still have 3 days for the postie to do his job Peter.

If nothing has arrived by pm Saturday then the Excise will run out at 2359 Sunday. Certificate should arrive by Mon/Tuesday if not then rocket the AA.

If you are stopped explain the situation and I feel sure you will be dealt with sympathetically. If not and reported, BiB has to send a special form to DVLA which will take time moving through the channels. As soon as Cert arrives then re-license. This fact will be transmitted electronicallyt by PO so that when BiB form arrives DVLA's record will be upto date and no evasion shown.

There are no days of grace at Law but I think you will find that DVLA do allow leeway of about 14 days.

Do it online - they check the insurance over the internet, so provided you've actually got it, you'll get your tax disc.

You can only renew online if you get the invite from the renewal (don't need MOT etc).

If you're renewing, it is normal for the renewal invitation to include a covernote for a week or two - this is enough to tax the vehicle with - check her reneal paperwork.

Last month (June) I had my car MOT'ed - new style cert issued, I already had received the tax disc renewal notice in the post. I was able to renew the tax online on the same day, the computer had been updated with the MOT details. Note you will need a switch card, as Visa / Mastercard / Amex is not at present accepted.

Did take a week for the tax disc to arrive, so you will probably fall foul of the requirement to display the document, and get attention from any of the boys in blue left working on foot, but at least the DVLC computer and all the registration plate recognition cameras won't be triggered into action.

Thanks guys. Encouraging to learn from DvD that BiB are likely to be OK.

I'm going to buy a 6 month disc to avoid this next year!

If the OP buys a 6 month disc it then means his insurance and his tax are staggered so no hassle with tax disc not arriving and also then you don't have 2 major costs at the same time of year.

When does/did her current tax expire.

If it only expires on the Sunday 31st, there should not be a problem with it.

"If it only expires on the Sunday 31st, there should not be a problem with it."

Do you mean a Monday renewal is OK?

The confirmation still hasn't come. AA will send a guaranteed next day one out tomorrow, but "the Royal Mail don't guarantee next day if it's a Saturday" (ah, bless...)

Another thought - are there any downsides on just doing SORN and then un-SORNing a few days later?
Tax disc problems - any ideas? - peterb
I think I've answered my own question - Swansea has a helpline open in the evenings until 8.30.

Apparently no fine for 14 days as long as we don't drive and Mrsb can drive my car.

Thanks for all posts.

Get a life people! I have never in 38 years of car owning actually renewed my tax disc before the expiry date. I normally do it up to a week or more after the end of the month. I've never been stopped, never had anybody tell me not to drive until it's renewed.

For people to worry that the full force of the law is going to come down on them for having a tax disc that's a couple of days overdue is sheer paranoia.

Alfafan,

-- you're a lucky man but your chances of been caught are increasing dramatically with cameras appearing everywhere checking tax/insurance details.
Surely it's simple enough to pay your tax a couple of weeks in advance instead of driving with no tax, hence no insurance & risking the chance of causing someone major grief if you're involved in an accident - it's not always about yourself, it's about other road users too !!!
Praise for DVLA - blue_haddock
The thing i hate about the DVLA is the message you get instead of an engaged tone "sorry but all of our 340 operators are busy, please try again later"

well, do carry on and soon you will discover that the rules changed in 2004.

"What happens if you do not re-license your vehicle?
The new rules mean that keepers who fail to re-license their vehicle (or declare SORN) will incur an automatic penalty of £80 (reduced to £40 if paid within 28 days). Determined offenders will be faced with prosecution and could be fined a minimum £1000.

DVLA will carry out a computer check each month to identify those vehicles without a valid tax disc. Although the new rules mean that it is no longer necessary for the vehicle to be seen on a public road before a penalty is issued current on-road enforcement will still continue.
"

and this is how much money they recovered:
"VED Enforcement
DVLA continued to expand its range of enforcement activities during the year and these now encompass wheelclamping, Automatic Number Plate Readers (ANPRs), SORN enforcement from the record, LO based enforcement staff, notifications from police and local authority systems and the introduction of a public telephone hot-line. We pursued successfully some 971,000 cases of evasion during the year. In financial terms we recovered some £105 million, comprising £32.3 million in cost recovery and out of court settlements, £40 million in back duty and £32.6 million in induced relicensing.

The whole process of getting tax is so difficult though. How many times have backroomers been in exactly this situation... sitting there with V5, MOT and cash all ready to go but unable to get taxed because they're waiting on their insurance certificate? You've bought your car, you've insured it, it's road legal, but you can't use it because you need some bit of paper before you can get another bit of paper to put in your windscreen. Taxing a car should be as easy as phoning a number and saying "I want to tax my car A123XYZ - here's my credit card number" - they should be able to do the checking up for you.

Now I know they're working on this, but I'll support their heavy stance on tax-evaders a lot more when they make it a bit easier for Joe Public to stay within the law. Nice to see that they're using a bit of common sense in the meantime though.

But you can bet your bottom dollar this isn't done on the first day of the month ad fines sent out.

And I wasn't talking about evasion, merely delaying payment for a couple of days.

I still think it's paranoia...

I've gone nearly a fortnight into the month to tax a car and not had a fine.
Tax disc problems - any ideas? - HF
I have heard many stories of people renewing insurance and not getting documents in time for taxing car, some having to wait a month or more and having to continually chase. I was extremely lucky when I needed emergency tax earlier this month, in that I phoned insurance company one afternoon and cover note arrived next morning. If anyone's thinking about changing their insurance they might do worse than giving Budget Insurance a call. (sorry, HJ, that's not entirely relevant is it?)
