Intermitently when started there is a knocking noise from the engine and the power steering won't work. My garage can't find the problem and want me to take the car back but I think it is dangerous so won't. Can anyone help as to what it might be? Interestingly the car is on its 3rd steering pump so I've always worried there was a more fundamental steering problem.

You can, with care, drive the car without power steering. If you won't take the car back, or get it delivered back, how is it going to get fixed? How old is the car, in that it has had 3 pumps and may need a 4th?

Thanks. When I did try to drive the car it was almost impossible. I was told that one is not only steering but pushing against the pump. Also advbised that if the fault occurred or cured itself while driving it could be dangerous. The car is still at the garage so that is how it can be fixed. The car is 3.5 years old but with 72k miles on the clock. Still a lot of pumps! Thanks for your interest.

Hi Pugster, I follow what you are saying. I have only tried driving a PAS car a short distance (to a garage) with the pump drive belt snapped and not a pump problem.
