I bought my 04 SRi 2.2 Direct in March and I honestly do not drive the car hard at all. After getting 3 points last year in my Passat, I seldom go above 79mph (use the cruise control).I am the 2nd owner of the car and noticed this week that it sounded really noisy almost like a Diesel.Recall work was to get done at some point (exhaust bracket),but being concerned, I took the car in today.I got called today by the Dealer saying my car was "off the road" until further notice. He mentioned Valve guides ,but it is still to be fully investigated. It is under Warranty. The car has done 15K miles.I've only done approx 4K in it.Will my car ever be the same again? Should I just accept the repair or should I be seriously concerned about this after only 3 months ownership. Is there anything else I can do?Again, I do not drive this car hard.I got the car at a good price and basically liked the look (spec) of it.

My car is only 14 months old and has covered 15K miles since new.It is a 2.2 Direct SRi and I am the 2nd owner.I have had the car since March and have never had it over 4000 Revs.Last week I noticed the engine was starting to sound noisy, almost like a Diesel.I put it in to my local Dealer and they have put it "off the road" until they resolve the issue.Valve guides were mentioned, possibly 1 had broken up or something.Should I be overly concerned about this??It is covered by Warranty, but my confidence in the car has taken a severe dip.

my vectra c is a rattle bag and dealer i went to was shockingly poor.

It turned out that my problem was the timing chain tensioner had came loose???This was repalced as was the chain under warranty.Confidence in the car is "low" to say the least

As I understand it, the oil feed to the timing chain has been subject to modification, making the oil supply less likely to become blocked.
It might be worthwhile double checking that such a modified oil feed has been fitted during the repair work carried out on your car.

If it has been fixed and the modified oil feed done it is probably OK. I would suggest regular (6K) oil changes on any car, but especially these Vauxhalls which the manufacturer seems to think can go years without fresh oil.

If the proper oil is used, then it can go the specified distance. Trouble is, people still insist on using cheap oil.
There is also only a certain amount of 2.2 engines affected by a poor lubrication hole to the camchain. I have the engine or chassis numbers somewhere that are affected, and Vauxhall *should* fit the modified part for nothing. If I can find them, I'll post ata later date. However, IIRC, it was all sorted out by 2002, so wonderwheels 2004 Vectra should already have the modified part fitted. Vauxhall told me that my yr 2000 Vectra-B had already had the modified part replaced.

Just last week I helped someone out with one of these.
Car was just out of the three year warranty. Only 55k miles and FVSH. The chain snapped one morning as the guy was on his way to work. Initially the Vauxhall dealer said 'tough' and were talking the best part of £1k for repair.
I rang Vaux UK (know someone fairly senior who works there) and was told that one of the senior managers would contact the owner. Amazingly enough they did! Vauxhall have now agreed to meet the cost of the parts (about £500 IIRC). Seems to be a well known problem to Vaux and nothing to do with using cheap oil.

Perhaps I should have clarified that statement. Providing the modification has been done, then there *shouldn't* be a problem.
There is a huge discussion over on cavweb (in the Vectra forum) about the 2.2 engine, and at least 2 people have posted that they have successfully managed to get Vauxhall to honour the repairs because of that posting and the advice given there.

Engine numbers from 11065400 onward had the revised lubrication nozzle and tensioner.

your driving style is probably not helping matters - nver over 4,000rpm ?
Its an SRi for goodness sakes.

Mark is right in some respects. Multivalve engines should be revved every now and again to enable the valves to rotate, otherwise they *could* end up sticking - which wasn't an uncommon thing in the 1.4 16v Vauxhall engine.
