I'm just wondering when you get a quote online does the insurer ask for proof of your details before issuing the certificate. I'm not talking about no claims bonus. I'm thinking more of proof of your area of employment??

Mine never have, tho i dont really see why it is relevent. As long as you can pay the money.

You can bet your bottom dollar they will do if you make a claim.

>>Any reason to wriggle out.

This does annoy me.

Your point is that if you have lied about your occupation when taking the contract, and the insurance company have the nerve to object when you're after them to pay something, then the insurance company is taking this as a "reason to wiggle out" and its nothing to do with the insured person lying ?

I've only once had to provide proof of NCB in many years of ordering car insurance online - my word has been good enough.

However, it isn't surprising, as the insurance companies can call on a massive database. The police have also been able to use the facility for some time after stopping motorists to check that insurance cover is in order.

and me.

people are quick to blame the motoring industry for being greedy rip-off merchants; while quite happily believe that society owes them a free ride.

when a traffic policeman stops them for some infringement, they complain "why are you not out catching the real thieves".

Any information provided online for a vehicle insurance quote should be as comprehensive and as accurate as submitted in any other form.

Insurance companies are quite entitled to reduce or even refuse a payout if misled, deliberately or otherwise, when taking out insurance cover.

You should also inform a company immediately of any changes which may affect your insurance cover whilst it is in operation.

What usually happens is that you fill out the form online but then they print it out, send it to you in the post and ask you to check it and sign it and return it. Thus you are warranting what you put down and if anything is false they will try and deny the claim.

Not sure why everyones suddenly kicking off. If the insurers played straight with us I could understand but their attitude is always 'your fully covered right up to the moment you make a claim'.

With regards to occupation, half of the online insurers have so few choices that it surely can't make that much difference to your premium anyway. The option of 'professional' is pretty broad - who defines what this actually means?

I can use several different job types as my preference as none of them are exactly what I do - so I normally choose which ever brings out the cheapest quote. I don't think I'm breaking any rules here am I?

I hope not, because that would be naughty ;). Anyway, I haven't told any untruths about no claims bonus.

I think it depends what you do. I'm a cathedral organist (!). Try to find that on the list of occupations held by most insurance companies. You run the risk of being labelled as professional musician, which they have designed for pop stars, bands etc, and you pay a fortune. They think you're a high risk occupation and charge accordingly. I have never indulged in a coke-fuelled orgy or trashed any hotel rooms!

I was advised (by a previous insurer) to say I was a music teacher (which is also true, because that's effectively what I do, even though it's not my job title) and that makes everything a lot cheaper. I've never had a problem, and in my one claim, what I did for a living wasn't relevant as to why I had a bump in ASDA car park.

Insurance Companies aren't going to ever investigate what you may or may not do for a living, not until they are faced with having to pay out thousands and thousands of pounds in some personal injury claim based upon your policy.

At this point they will go through everything that you've told them with a fine tooth comb.

try telling that to a 70 year old retired teacher whose £500 worth rover-metro was stolen and trashed.

when she put in her claim, the "loss-adjuster" did the following: "At this point they will go through everything that you've told them with a fine tooth comb." amongst the things they checked: the licence, mot, annual mileage, and they even wanted proof of regular maintenance before they agreed to pay out the £500 write off value.

so beware, be honest, declare anything you are unsure of, phone and ask if you are uncertain, confirm in writing if they say "don't worry, you are covered".

And when making a claim follow the 3 letters rule. As in the 4th letter if it needs to be written, comes from your solicitor.
