The oil level on my 2001 520i 2.2 needs topping up - would anyone know the best make and viscosity of oil for this car. So far the car has been in the hands of BMW agents so what oil would they have used?

Just ask your Dealer if you have any doubts...although I'm sure the handbook gives an indication.

The oil used and recommended by the BMW Main Dealer network is Castrol SLX Longlife2 0W-30, which is fully synthetic and meets the highest quality parameters within the oil industry.

With a car four years old, especially if it has done plenty of miles, I'd stick to what has been used previously, whatever that is. I've done exactly that with a recently acquired MB W126, which has been on Magnatec for the past 70k.

Actually thats quite good advice IMHO since changing the type, quality and rating of the oil 'mid way through' on an engine might not be advised. i think there have been many threads before where people have thought to go to fully synth. after having used semi-synth for quite some time - this can cause problems with the engine although its done with the best of intentions.
