Just got 3pf&t for younger daughter to drive what's becoming the family heirloom - Fiesta Azura 1.1. 17 yo, on provisional, it was £50 cheaper with same insurer than 19 yo was 2 years ago. I guessed maybe the car is worth less.
Oh, and they were each over £200 cheaper than local lads looking for similar quotes...

I'm a 32 y/o driving a Civic Type-R. Paid £650 two years ago, then £470 last year (they had an offer promising to undercut renewal premium by 15%). I've seen similar offers floating around recently, so I hope to achieve circa £400 this year, then £350 next, etc, etc.

Premiums are generally bottoming out. On average they are lower than last year but I doubt they will continue to fall for much longer. It is a very competitive market but there is only so much discounting they can do before it becomes unprofitable. (Plus they have the lovely new FSA rules to pay for). It's worth remembering to get a comp quote when getting a TPFT quote. In some cases comp can actually be cheaper because of the way discounts are calculated (plus companies are more competitive with comp risks). Also insurers have cut costs considerably with their helpline/approved repairer schemes so they can afford to cut comp premiums.
If you drive something flash enquire about getting a Thatcham one immobliser fitted. Try and garage the car, cut your mileage, restrict the named drivers and increase the excess.
Oh yes and try and avoid speeding fines.... :)

My insurance quote has definately become cheaper over the last three years. Started at 350+ with direct line, down to 240 last year with budget and now 215, again with budget (but different insurer).
Looking for under 200 next year.
Car is a 306 durbo BTW.

Not sure if the fall is across the board though - I guess someone somewhere will still have to pay since the companies must/need to make a profit.
My wife who has two years NCB (and has held her full licence for 3 yrs.) pays a very reasonable £600 for her BMW 330SE. Of course she has to be _very_ careful for if she were to have a prang or get points, I'm sure her insurance will hit the roof.
Im not plain stupid, just a special kind of stoopid.

If I'm lucky - VERY lucky, in June, my third year insurance quote will be around a grand. TPFT, no accidents.
I know as a general rule you have to be 21 but does anyone know of any insurance companies who would insure me Fully comp so that I'm able, on odd occasions to drive other cars third party?

Mine are reasonably stable. Mind you we pay over £2,000 to insure the Trajet and Forester. Mainly due to location and lots of scallys around trying to nick cars, and partly due to business use and wife's previous habit of scraping cars along walls.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

I'm amazed you can't get it lower than that, a design criterion on the Focus was that it had to be cheap to insure. Plus it's very competitive out there at the moment. Do you live in a high risk area? Try adding an older (preferably female) family member to the policy, it reduces my quotes.
I didn't know you couldn't get fully comp if you were under 21!
I pay £750 for fully comp on my '99 Passat TDi 110 Sport. Fairly low risk area, parked on driveway, aged 23 with two years NCD and 3 points for speeding. I've been testing the water ahead of renewal (due in the autumn) and with an extra years' NCD and being one year older I'm looking at nearer £500.

I thought you had to be 25 to be covered TP on your own policy?
My quotes are similar to yours, last year was JUST over £1k with 2 years no claims, group 9 car, fully comp.
Living anywhere else than Liverpool, It'd have been under £1k after the first year.

My premium's done the opposite!
Recent renewal quote was up 25% for no claims or any other changes.
Phoned around and best I could do was find something at no increase on last year's premium.

Re: Getting comp insurance so that you could drive another car on TP cover - about ten years ago I had TPFT cover through Endsleigh and this allowed me to driver other cars with TP cover - I thought it unusual at the time, but checked with them that this was the case. I was over 21, and under 25 at the time!
Re: Dropping insurance premiums - from renewal premiums and internet check, I thought mine had bottomed out. However, Joanna Lumley and her chums at Privilege took £50 out of both my premiums (£350 each). Robbing Peter to pay Paul (or some such phrase) as Privilege appears to be part of Direct Line, who I was with before..
No connection with either DL or Privilege, for the record

You can obtain comp quotes at 17 if you can afford it but it is true that insurers may not provide third party for driving other cars until you are 25 and over. Don't make the mistake of driving other cars under a cover-note either. Only the certificate will show the extension. The other general rule is that once a car is over £3k - £3.5k you will have to insure it comp.
|
Sorry - I wasn't being very clear. You can get insured fully comp whenever you want. The age stipulation is on the ability to drive other cars on your fully comp insurance.
It's not a high risk area (at least I don't think it is) - I'm just too young. Would you insure me?
bobdabilda - It could be 25 - I've heard both numbers. Whereabouts in Liverpool did you/do you live?
frostbite - sorry!
jono99 - I'll try Ensleigh - they've always tried to match quotes but never have managed to beat them.
I haven't had to insure my car fully comp yet even though it's worth more than 3 grand. But I will be doing so in June.
Thanks for all your help.

I'm living at home in West Derby. At uni here as well.
I don't think it's a particularly high risk area, but it's not decided on such a localised scale.
Check out this link from the HJ website guide to identify the risk assessment in your area.

Definately in my case. When I called my insurer back in January to see how much my new A3 would be to insure I was quoted just short of £600. The car is now ready for collection so I called yesterday for a requote and it came in at £470 - no changes in circumstances at all.
