Cleaning an engine - Baz100
I saw this twin-pack so called "Engine Cleaner" and "Engine Detailer" in Halfords at the weekend, it was £8. Apparently all you have to do is warm the engine, spray on the cleaner, leave it for 20mins, rinse it off then spray on the Detailer giving it a protective & clean finish. Does anyone know if this stuff is good for the engine? Is it worth it? Or can it cause damage by possibly removing the protective coating on some engine surfaces??

Any reason why you would need to use it/think of using it?.Depending on what the contents are.I personnaly would leave well alone. Most garages now wont clean up an engine now unless a bad oil leak.Due to chemical damage to electrical seals to ECU and sensors.

Don't know about the detailer but stuff like the engine cleaner has been around for many years in the form of Gunk.It works very well if you have had an oil leak for example. But,as Steve.o says, you would have to be very careful about protecting electrical connections and do not use a pressure washer.

OK cheers guys, i'll probably stay away from it. I think I was just suckered in by the pictures on the front of the box and thought "wow, imagine if my engine look as shiny as that"!!!!

Was once trying to sell a Rover 827 Sterling and dithered over whether to clean the engine compartment, which really was pretty clean anyway. Decided not to, in case it upset something, and buyers might think I was trying to hide something.

First potential buyer rejected it, apparently because I "hadn't bothered" to clean the engine bay... Different strokes for different folks I guess.
