I've recently been chewing over the idea of building (or rather, getting someone to build) a custom motortrike. I have a reasonable idea of what I want it to look like and so on (not entirely dissimilar from the machine Billy Connolly rides on his World Tour series), as well as what I would use as a donor engine etc.
Thing is, I don't know much about what would be involved in insuring such a beast, how easy it would be to do so, cost, etc. (especially considering that I live in NI), so any experience or advice about this would be welcome.
Nor am I entirely sure how I would ensure that it is road-legal. I've heard of SVA, and from hazy memory, this stands for Single Vehicle Approval and is the test a non-EU car would have to pass to be road-legal in the UK - I think that passing this test is necessary for the vehicle to get a Certificate of Conformity. Would this also be the test used to ensure that vehicles such as a custom-built trike are roadworthy/road-legal? Assuming it is, what are the aspects of the vehicle they look at - is it essentially like getting an MOT from new, for example, or is it more involved than that?

Andy,
Someone who works at my Mum's school built his own trike. Absolute monster (the trike that is) and he loves it. In two weeks when they go back to school I'll have a word and get some info if you want.
I'm sure someone will know more sooner though.

As I understand it, since 17th June 2003, customers wishing to register motor cycles, trikes, quads(ATV)have to produce evidence of type approval unless exempt ( not designed to exceed 6 mph, pedestrian controlled, use by physical handicaped, agric vehs, trialllers ie enduro, vehicles over 10 years). Proof will be in the Certificate of conformity and if not presented then a Certificate under the Single Vehicle Approval Scheme will be required.
The SVA scheme seeks to establish that vehicles will comply with UK design and safety standards.
Before committing yourself to welder, spanner etc do you research with the Insurance Company and as far as SVA go to
VOSA
www.vosa.gov.uk
Also don't forget to have a word with DVLA as to Taxation class and Licence required.
Chap near me started building them commercially but suffered a fire. Don't know if he is back in business.

Hello stealth, thanks for the information. I got myself a trike last year and am currently insured with Bikesure, other possibilities I've come across are Carol Nash and Sureterm. I'm a member of BTW, if you don't mind I'll post that contact number you've provided on their forum as contacts are always useful. If you want to look up the site, it's www.btw-uk.co.uk/ - log into the forum and you'll be able to contact other trikers in your area.

There's more than one way to skin a cat ... all I'll say is that if I manage to afford a second trike as a custom build, I won't be too worried about MSVA. Probably helps to know one of the best trike builders around though!
