Tyres won't inflate...Rover 25 - djo
Hi,
I'm new here, but it seems the sort of place where I might find a solution to my car trouble.

I have a P reg Rover 214si, the newer shape that turned into the Rover 25.

The tyres should be kept at 30psi, but mine just will not inflate. They are currently stuck on 25-27psi and my footpump just won't touch it. I can pump away for ages and nothing goes in.

I bought a Halford compressor type thingy, plugs into the cigarette lighter and has a gauge on the front. This does not work either, no air gets into the tyres.

I have tried both pumps on a different car and they both work fine. I have tried adjusting how far I push their connectors onto the valves but to no avail.

Has anyone got any ideas what I could do? I really don't want to drive any long distances with the tyres 3-5psi under pressure. Hope you can help.
Thanks
David

It sounds as though the wheel has a valve fitted which your pump(s) won't open. I am not a Rover specialist, but maybe it has run flat tyres or similar fitted. It may be worth going into a fast fit tyre outlet and asking them.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like a faulty valve. Possibly slightly bent. You should be able to buy the removal tool and valve from a motorists shop..They only screw in using the tool..If that doesnt help a new valve and rubber is needed.Though would need to go to tyre repairers to have fitted

The problem could be that the tyres have spent a v. long time without any attempt to inflate them or check pressures. Sometimes under those circumstances the valve sticks to its seat and requires an enormous pump pressure to free it. Try pushing the valve stem in using a metal rod or piece of wood. If it suddenly releases air you may find the tyre will pump up ok.

If the valves weren't opening then he would not get a reading of 25-27 psi. Driving the car with this level of pressure in the tyres will not hurt them.

Very good point Simon. My dad's car had a stuck tyre valve once which pointed me in the (wrong) direction.

Thanks for your help folks, I can let air out with light fingernail pressure so I don't think the valve is stuck.

Unless you know of any puncture sealant being used? it can only be the valve.Nothing else there..

Sounds like a dodgy compressor or foot pump to me!

djo, how are you getting the 25-27 p.s.i reading ?
Is it with a separate pressure gauge, with the pump or with the compressor ?
The reason I ask is that I recently bought a cheap foot pump and had a similar problem, no air would go in, but I was not getting a reading on the pump's gauge either. It turned out to be the little pin inside the connector on the end of the pump's hose that was not protruding enough to push the valve down. I solved it by pushing the lever on the connector up and away from the hose, instead of down towards the hose, as there seemed to be more movement on the cam action that way. I wouldn't expect that to occur with two different pumps/compressors though unless your valves are seated deeper than normal in the stem.

I have a seperate pressure gauge. Thanks for the help, I have now managed to fix the problem, it was a combination of two things:

1- The tyre valves were a bit sitcky, if I pushed the pin in the valve with my finernail it would hiss, but not as much as it used to. I used a small metal rod to push the pin harder, and suddenly whoosh, the air would flow freely.

2- I checked the footpump, and it didn;t seem to be blowing as much air out as I thoguht it should. So I sprayed a bit of WD40 on it to loosen the mech. After a few pumps it became freer and the flow of air increased.

The combination of these thing allowed my tyres to inflate, I have the manual's recommended 30psi in each corner.
Thanks for everyone's help
