Indicators not working - Transit - owen
1995 transit. A bit of a shed (just to set the scene for you!).

Yesterday the indicators stopped working. When you indicate or turn on the hazards, the green dashboard light stays on continuously, and none of the actual indicators do anything.

Have changed the relay for a brand new one - no joy.

Have tried three other switches from the scrappy, none worked.

I'm a bit stumped now - any ideas?

It sounds like the earth (brown wire) is at fault. Check to see that all you've got continuity between the chassis and the earth pin of the relay connector. I had this problem when I lost earth in my Escort (by splicing the wire deliberately myself - don't ask :-S ...).

Blown bulbs usually make the indicators blink faster rather than not at all.

Aren't the indicator and hazard switch in the same unit?

No, the hazard switch is separate. They often stick sort of halfway between on and off, usually when used for the first time in years. Very often a bit of fierce poking will sort it out temporarily. A bit of WD40 often works as well.

Sorry, Just re - read the thread. 1995 Tranny - the hazard switch is part of the indicator switch assy. That's my diagnosis out of the window.

I would go for an earth somewhere. The indicator relays on something that old (IIRC) are likely to have a bimetallic strip which heats up and switches the circuit between the dashboard lamp and the actual lights. If insufficient current flows (hence dodgy earth) then the strip doesn't get hot enough to switch the relay over.

It is probably the switch.on some. indicators were combined on the one switch(not talking of stalk switch)it is a seperate relay type box plugged in to the circuit.If it has failed you wont get anything but lights on all the time/no flash.Need to find it and replace
