I have a mk3 Golf 1.8, which I bought a few weeks ago. Today after a 50 mile drive, white smoke started appearing from under the bonnet, accompanied by a burning smell.
Has anyone experienced this before or have any idea as to what may be the problem, how easy it is to fix, cost, etc.
Thank You.

Where did you get it from?.Sounds like possible hose split/radiator core/water pump failure.Pressume no warning of this before it happened?

I bought it privately. The temp guage never moves from 90,I dont know if thats too high. No warning at all,it was when I got back in the city traffic that I noticed it,when in queues, and when I pulled over there was quite a bit of white smoke billowing out.

It could be steam from te cooling system, or smoke coming form a belt running over a seized pulley.
Lift the bonnet and have a good look round. Check the water level before starting hte car.

Thanks for replying guys - I'll have a poke around ,but I really dont know anything whatsoever about cars,so it will probably just have to go to the garage.Cheers!

Maybe it was a carrier bag that blew under the car and subsequently got stuck to the exhaust.

Wonder if you may have a couple of problems.Temp guage sender and or fan switch/fan not working.Fan switch failing will cause it to boil over..Possibly explaining the white smoke/steam
