Classic Car Insurance - Recommendations - RichardP
Hi,
My insurance is up for renewal in early April for my 1982 2.8 Granada and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations of companies that have been competitive and offer good service/action if the need arises. I'm expecting my renewal with Lynbrook Insurance (only had a classic policy for one year so far) to be approx. £230 fully comp, incl. basic breakdown and 5000 mile cap. (I'm 26 yo)

Thanks

Richard,

that sounds quite expensive.

I will not recommend the one I use simply because it will depend upon your individual circumstances so I would suggest you buy a copy of something like Practical Classics and ring 2 or 3 of the companies advertising thereing which will give you a good feel of whether your quote of £230 is a good deal.

Make sure you compare like with like; same excess, legal cover etc

I pay about half that - Triumph 2000 - with Norton Heritage.
But watch for the extras. I found recovery was really cheap as an additional car on my ordinary insurance, so therefore not worth buying on a classic policy. But other companies throw them in for next to nothing.
Some let you increase the mileage allowance if you are running out of miles, others only do 5000, or do 3000 and 6000 but not 5000.
There is a tendency for companies to have degrees of classicness. Over 20 years old everything is a classic, but some discriminate against newer cars that they consider could be used just like a modern car.
Some just accept your word for its condition, other want a set of photographs. That's a pain if you live in the digital age, because they won't accept them, and you have to dig out your old Brownie 125 and remember how to use it.

Sorry, but a 1982 Granada is a classic car?

Next they'll be calling Allegros classics.

This sounds very expensive.

I live just outside the M25 and my TR7 conv is only costing £101 pa for 3000 a year, 2 named drivers and commuting use. (Academic since it does not go out if rain is in the air!) It also includes 6 months foreign use.

However I have the advantage of being a grumpy old man.

You'll have to ring around as the companies vary so much depending on your circumstances. I've had good service from Footman James, including a claim that was handled well, so I can recommend them. I pay £82 pa umlimited mileage, agreed value and breakdown cover for two Morris Minors. However, I'm an old git living in a rural area with both cars garaged.

Thanks for your help. I have phoned a couple of places who advertise in the back of magazines, but £230 is about the best it gets (presumably due to my age and big engine?). I am quoting its value as £2000 (it's pretty much a condition 1). Whether it's a true classic, that's subjective I suppose! It gets a surprising amount of attention when I'm out and about in it and it goes to a few shows (off to one in Germany with the club I'm a member of in May which I'm looking forward too - first time driving on the right as well...should be interesting!)
I'll keep phoning round and see if they can beat my renewal when it comes through.
As far as the MK 2 Granada is concerned, I think mit's the last proper car Ford built - very comfortable, refined, durable and not too bad on fuel on a run.

Thanks - will keep you posted

Footman James was suggested to me and the quote online was very good indeed. It was for a five year old car for a mid twenties driver. Quotes were for 1500 and 3000 miles but I do not recall what mileages were also available. I think it was about £100 between the two quotes.

Try the obvious none classic brokers like Screentrade, Elephant,
confused.com. People have told me that Adrian Flux and Lancaster insurance are good. Also try having your mum/girlfriend on the policy this sometimes brings the cost down.
If you can't get it any cheaper just gloat in the fact that you are not losing thousands in a year in depreciation.
