Have just bought a new MKV Golf 1.6FSI SE version and am delighted with and all its sophistication and features etc. BUT am slightly surprised at the amount of tyre noise that penetrates the cabin. The car is shod with the standard alloys that come with the car and have Michelin Energy tyres size 195/65 on 15" wheels. The engine is very hushed and there is very little wind noise and so perhaps I'm more aware of extraneous noise.
I wonder if the extra amount of rubber on the road, compared with my previous car's (Rover 414 on 175/65 14" wheels and same tyres) has something to do with it?

When I first had my Vectra new the road tyre noise was very pronounced. It was fitted with Dunlop.
Now on its second set which are Toyo and they are very quiet so it could simply be the make of tyre which is causing it.

More rubber on the road will always create more noise. It's a tricky area, because the same tyre make & size can often give different results on different cars - and similarly, different sizes of the same tyre can perform quite differently. When you come to change the tyres, repost the question and see if anyone has found a tyre which gives good results on your car.
BTW, don't believe all the advertising you hear - I had Dunlop SP01s - "the quiet tyre" - fitted to the front of my Saab (in 215/55x16) and they were noisier than the previous Michelin Primays.

Are they at the recommended pressure? Don't trust your own gauge or the one at the filling station. Measure with at least two, with the tyre at the same temperature.

Look for a tyre with a more asymmetric block pattern across the width. If there are great chunks of tread hitting the road at the same time then the tyre is more noisy. I have found continental and uniroyal to be pretty quiet even on wide wheels.

Having driven numerous MK V golfs(1.6 FSE,1.9 TDI,2.0 TDI AND GTI)over the past four months.I have not noticed any unreasonable tyre noise from any of the models i have driven. All have been fitted with various tyre sizes.Think that as you have changed vehicles to a car fitted with tyres that have a bigger contact patch on the road, you are hearing more noise, but not an un reasonable amount. As suggested, check the pressures using a couple of different gauges when the tyres are cold(always).
