My 96 306 DT just died big time...turns out the head gasket had done and no water was getting to the engine, despite water being in the radiator. Long story short... engine block is cracked..ooops..and as far as my (very) limited knowledge goes -the engine needs replacing with a 2nd hand one. I have contacted breakers and they are quoting me about £450 delivered. I guess I need to find a diesel specialist to put one in for me, but I don't really know where to start. Any advice on any of this including a recommendation of a garage to use in N. London or nearby, I would be very grateful.

I can't help you with a good garage in North London, Bigjj.
I would caution you to cost this project accurately, and make sure your components come with a guarantee you can trust. Most garages would recommend you swop the clutch while the engine is out. You will probably need to pay the garage to take the vehicle to their workshop
I know it doesn't make sense, but it may be cheaper to sell the thing for spares and buy another
You may like the motor, but

It now appears that this is going to cost about £450 for the engine and £700 for labour. Does this sound about right? Any ideas about how I can get a better deal or ensure I get an engine that is reliable? Any help appreciated!!!

Heeeeeeeeeelllllpppppp please!!! Any ideas at all???

You're looking at £1150 assuming everything goes to plan and you don't go over. Don't want to sound gloomy but is a 9 year old 306 306 worth it? As Crinkly Dave says - you may be better selling it as spares.

Thanks Adam and CrinklyDave for your messages.
Does anyone know how much I might be able to get selling for spares. Before this happened I was hoping (fairly realistically I think) to sell the car for around £2.5k-£3k. With the repairs being roughly £1,200 I would need to recoup at least £1,200 for spares if it was to be the better option. Is this possible? What do you think is my best option. Advice appreciated.

I'm not really the best person to advise you on this but two things spring to mind. You could always try and sell in on Ebay as spares or not. I would think you stand a good chance of getting a good price...which leads me nicely onto my next point. I hate to be the one to tell you this but I think 3 grand may be a little steep although looking on Autotrader, there are quite a few P reg ones holding their own at the 2.5k bracket so maybe I'm wrong.
Good luck with whatever you do.

Still puzzled which route to take. hmmmmm.....

For anyone that may be interested: Decided to replace engine, paying £375 for a 2nd hand complete DT engine including delivery. Garage say they will charge around £300 for labour, so total should be £700-£800, which is not unbearable considering I had expected £1,100.
Cheers to those that tried to help!

Being in the same situation myself I would like to counter the 'scrap it and buy another' argument by saying that it has to be worth considering what value can be placed on knowing the recent history of the car you already own and what isn't wrong with it. I think there is a value in 'the devil you know' compared to taking on another car with other possible problems you may not find out about until too late.
