Leon Windows - Scarred/Pitting - steveb
Picked up the Leon today from the dealer.

Despite trying to look at and inspect everything, I didn't notice a problem with the back drivers side windows until got home.

Basically the rear door's window is scarred and pitted with seemingly rust like deposits. Never seen anything like it before. Will try to use a glass cleaner like Autoglym tomorrow but it doesn't look promising as they are very hard.

Anyone had experience of this and what the cause / remedy was ?

Thanks,

Steve

Probably caused by sparks from an angle grinder. Sounds like your new car has been in the bodyshop.

I think your best bet. Take it back to them as it is. And get them to explain why window is scarred in this manner..Would not touch it yourself..As you may cause more damage. It will be up to them to replace window..Though I am surprised body not affected..Sparks from angle grinder spread so a window on its own is doubtfull..

Thanks for this. I am inclined to agree. As you say there are no obvious marks on the bodywork or paint. No overspray on the rubber etc. No issues with colour matching on the doors - although it's dark now and impossible to check.

Strange.

I will be contacting the dealer tomorrow.

I angle grinded some steel in my back garden, and allowed the sparked to stream at the windows of the house, because I didn't realise what would happen. Some weeks afterwards, I noticed what I thought was brown flecks of fence stain on the kitchen window, as we had just done the fence. When I went outside with a stanley knife blade to scrape them off, I found all the windows had these chips in the glass with rust sort of fused into them. Not much I could do, very unsightly, but really does back up your theory. The white UPVC frames were unmarked.

Do they transport by train still? could be train brake dust - if its a light brown colour.

I did think this, having read previous posts - however the effect is very localised over the rear window and a few flecks on the front - no damage anywhere else.

I believe the car was simply too close to some grinding for a few moments, causing the pitting.

As to a remedy - do you think the dealer is liable/willing to contribute in any way, or am I likely to have to bear the cost of replacements myself?

Sparks from an angle grinder will damage glass in the way you describe. The surrounding paintwork might not be affected. Anyway, damage to paintwork can be polished out. Not with glass though.

Would like to understand the physics of how molten metal which can eat into glass, leave paint and plastics unaffected - as it seems is the case here.

Is this a new car?

Certainly agree that its been in a body shop. The sparks would have marked the paint, so I suspect that after the grinding the car was painted. Look for any marks on the rear light clusters and the wheels.

I don't know why the glass and not the paint should be affected, but I've seen it happen a few times and I did it myself a couple of months ago. I always make sure that no other vehicle is in spark range but on this occasion another truck was parked about 6 feet away as I was grinding. Preoccupied as I was, I didn't notice until too late. Damage to windscreen, surrounding paint and trim unmarked. I'm not saying that paintwork won't be damaged by sparks, but in my experience, long distance sparks will damage glass and not much else. I might carry out a little experiment at work tomorrow !

Thanks for all your comments.

Car is 15 months old, and shows the usual signs of slight stone chips and small door dints etc. Paintwork is not immaculate, but shows no signs of overspray or other disturbance around trim.

Will ask Autoglass etc for a quote on replacing window tomorrow.
