All,
I'm thinking of getting rid of the Mazda Xedos 9 that we've used as our family car for the past 18 months.
There's been nothing at all go wrong with the Mazda (nor with its 626 predecessor) but we're getting to the stage of wanting an estate.
Now, my first choice was for an Omega Estate (my other car's an Omega and I love it) but before I do, I wondered if anyone of the Japanese manufacturers do an Omega size estate? I've racked my brains, but I can't think of any. Are there? I understand there are plenty of Vectra sized ones, but Omega?
If ony Mazda did a Mazda 9 estate...

PS anyone know how I should pronounce "Xedos"?

Cuss-ay-doss, allegedly.
What sort of age and budget do you want, bearing in mind that Omegas go from £1k to £20k (theoretically...)
The obvious choice would be a Camry estate, but that would probably be older than the Xedos. Also surprisingly rare now on AutoTrader and not as cheap as I thought.
The current shape Accord estate is pretty big, but you're looking at £15k or so for one. A new Avensis might be a little cheaper but still well the wrong side of £10k.
|
The Galant and Legacy might be a little bit on the small side but I don't think you can rule them out either. Both of these are over fifteen feet long (Omega 15' 9").
|
Might be too much money, but how about a Honda Accord Tourer?
I very nearly bought one, but the looks got me down. It's soooooooooo ugly. I was afraid all my friends would laugh their socks off - good car though.

Yeah, I would go for the new Accord Tourer too, especially the new 2.2 diesel version. Physically it might be smaller than the Omega, but the load space wont be smaller due to the rear overhang. Looks FAR better in saloon format though!

"Cuss-ay-doss, allegedly"
Interesting - no wonder it didn't sell (a shame, though). I must admit, I'd never thought of pronouncing Xerox as Cuss-ay-rocks!

Midlifecrisis seems to be in the same boat. Lots more on this here:

The Subaru has a good following and lots of room (as well as being interesting mechanically, which appeals to me, but not to everyone).

The galant estate is great looking imo and has masses of load space.V reliable too of course...
|
Mitsubishi Sigma estate is probably a match for the Omega size-wise, don't know if they're any good though. Can be had very cheaply....if you can find one.
|
Biggest Mitsubishi estate here is called the Diamante, definitely Omega-sized or bigger. 2.5 & 3.5 litre versions, not sure if they're available in UK or what they call them there. Galant/Legnum range has generally stopped here now. There is also a 4WD Diamante, with Auto stability control etc, but not with twin turbos. ;-) now *that* would be fun...

Thanks for all the responses; plenty of food for thought.
My thinking about the size of car relates to the fact that I feel much happier with my family in a bigger, heavier car, rather than the load size.
I'll certainly have a look at the Galant estate - a friend of mine has the saloon and says it's bulletproof.
So, filled with all these sensible thoughts, I drove down the M3 tonight. When the Jaguar S Type went past, all my good sense went out of the window in and dissolved in a pool of lust. "Why not give the wife the Omega saloon and get one of those? An estate's not that important anyway...she'll understand"
I'll be alright in the morning.

Funnily enough Vin I've been thinking along the same lines ( big japanese estates, not S-types); for the same reason. Parked wifey's Omega estate next to a Mitubishi Sigma the other day, they are fairly similar in size, Omega probably slightly bigger.
Spam '2 Omegas' Can....:-)

I had a play with all the buttons in the new Mitsubishi Grandis yesterday, they are a very big car, seven seats if you need them.
Only available new of course so expensive.
