The seat belts on my 18 month old Peugeot 206 have become very sluggish to retract, sometimes getting shut in the door when closed, sometimes tripping me up when I get out etc. Took it to my friendly dealer, asking for the spring return mechanism to be re-tensioned, and got back to be told that the cure was 2 new belts (under warranty) at £98 each + VAT + fitting. Surely something like this must be adjustable? Perhaps I should have taken it to one of my local country garages and saved Peugeot some money. So many things seems to unadjustable and can only be replaced but not fixed.

What is the retraction mechanism in a seat belt, and can it be DIY lubricated? [incidentally, a left-side belt doesn't work on the right side of a car].

I have never known seat belts to be user serviceable.?

Get yourself along to Halfords, or similar, and purchase a can of silicone spray - not the greasy stuff you use on dashboards and bumpers though.

DD,thank you for that link. We are not talking WD40 when silicone spray is mentioned, are we? It is the "Nylon and Rubber Spray" sold in Halfords; am I right please? I would like to fix it without bothering the warranty but I don't want oily clothes or passengers, so I must get the right stuff!

Nope. WD40 is something completely different.

Apparantly their is a non greasy product available. Not sure of the brand name though. Not used it myself, just reporting from a previous thread on the subject. I *would* imagine the instructions on the can label will be able to tell you what applications you can use it on.

I bought following last week.
"Holts Rubber and Nylon Lubricant."
150ml can from Motor Factors £5.35

"Lubricates and protects the seals of doors, hatchbacks and all mechanical systems during both summer and winter. Prevents jamming and makes it easy for moving parts to slide under a light load. Stops squeaking."

Worked fine on easing electric window guides.
Just sprayed a little. It smells a little oily to me and I would not be too sure using it on seat belts for that reason.

There is a dry silicone made for curtain tracks. This might be suitable.

Why? Its your right, plus if Pug dont get hit with warranty claims they wont do anything to fix the problem for the future.

"But I don't want oily clothes or passengers, so I must get the right stuff!"

dont take the risk, get it fixed.

Before you start spraying anything, take a look at the slots through which the seatbelts slide. If they are very narrow, you may have the same problem I once had.

My old Mazda 626 had seatbelts that just wouldn't retract. When I looked at the slots, they were gummed up with a layer of crud that had obviously scraped off the belt over the years, enough that they were snagging the belt. It looked suspiciously like the stuff that builds up on the underside of your mouse. Ten minutes work with a kitchen knife scraped them clean. Then the belts worked perfectly.

V

P.S. I bet you turned over your mouse for a peek.

I agree with RF's statment above.
The setbelt mechanism will be bought in by Pug from a designated suppier, so if the warranty claims are at a high enough level (i.e. everyone who has the problem makes a complaint) they will do something about it.

If no-one claims for the seatbelt then Pug will not know that they have a problem and will not do anything about it.

Incidentally, it's a good idea to reel out the belt to full length and clean it occasionally - the innermost parts never see the light of day and can develop mildew, which may make them sticky?
