My father is 79 and had a mild heart attack before Christmas. His insurance is up for renewel and he should obviously mention his heart problems, but is fearful that they will refuse to renew. He lives in the middle of nowhere in Mid Wales, miles from public transport. What should he do?
|
He hasn't got much choice but to mention it - better that than causign himself a whole bunch of trouble if he tries to claim on his insurance and it comes to light then.
If he gets a letter from his doctor before hand stating that he is fit to drive, and sends that in with the declaration, that will help.
At that age it is frequent that the insurance company will ask for a health declaration anyway. Haven't they done that ?
If they have, he *really* has no choice.

Shop around for insurance if the current insurers are unwilling to reinsure your father. Some companies are more lenient with older drivers. It's the same with travel insurance too.
Ditto about getting a letter from his GP

I understand that heart attack comes under the definition of a "relevant disability" of which in relation to a Driving Licence held, has to be notified to DVLA. (S94 RTA 1988).
If you go to DVLA site under Drivers you can pick up the information.

He must notify relevant facts but I'm sure he'll find that a company like Saga will be sympathetic to his plight if no one else.
My Father in Law was 87 when he died and had had heart problems and he was insured with Saga.
What worries me is that they keep sending me their magazine with special offers on Cardigans and Slippers!
