I’ve driven countless cars over the years, from Fiat Panda 750 to McLaren 570S through luxury saloons and knackered hatchbacks. But what was the most disappointing car I’ve ever driven? Was it the Nissan Bluebird ZX Turbo that was about as sporty as Nora Batty despite the bright red paint and spoiler kit? Or the horrible Mk V Ford Escort that everyone loved to hate?

I think it has to be the Ford Capri. After listing after one as a new 17yr old driver I finally drove one in my 20’s, aaaand absolutely hated it. It was awful. Cart springs and an ancient asthmatic carb fed pinto motor do not a sports coupe make.

But what was your greatest motoring disappointment?

Probably a Lotus Elan Plus 2. It looked wonderful inside and out and was hugely uncomfortable and hard to drive.

Close second would be a BMW M5 that had massive grunt but absolutely no character.

I was really underwhelmed with the Vauxhall Astra mk III, I'd had and loved two company mk II Astra's but the mkIII felt underwhelming to say the least.

I suppose the other lemon was a company Maestro 1.3 - I'd liked the A series in other cars but in the Maestro it was truly hideous.

Strangely enough I quite liked my Ford Capri mkII 2.0 ghia auto. It had a great TC auto box and a progressive twin choke Weber carb. Yes rear suspension was cart springs but it actually drove pretty well for the time, although my later Cortina mkIV was way better re handling, ride and refinement.

“ I was really underwhelmed with the Vauxhall Astra mk III”

Sold loads of them, but totally get your point. They were simple and well made. But boy were they r****** to drive. The 1.4 spi Merit had 60bhp, while the Mk II 1.4 Merit had 75 and much less weight to haul around. The Citroen ZX showed the market that you could have fun in a mass market family hatchback, and sent everyone back to the drawing board.

Actually owned, Second generation Ford Festiva, bought in Taipei for 20K NT (about 500 quid) from a priest, so you;d have thought it should have been an "honest car", but I could nt get it to run right, and when it conked out where it shouldnt have been parked and the cops got it, I let them keep it.

Similar experience with a 100 quid London Volvo 340, which seemed very solid (though unfortunately this extended to quite a lot of the oil under the rocker cover, which I sc***ed out with a spoon) I liked this one more but in view of the price I suppose it wasn't such a dsappiontment.,

In retrospect I think these were both probably due to vacuum leaks, which I got quite good at fixing with the Skywing, so they probably could have been reprieved fairly easily had I known.

Biggest disappointments have been cars I looked at but didn't buy, notably a Mini Marcos, but also a Citroen 2CV and a Ford Cortina 1600E, but thats a disappointment with my judgement rather than the cars.

Not really sure on this one, could be because of memory problems, maybe because i'm more inclined to see the positives in an otherwise poor car?. Also could be something I have noticed on the forum from some members in particular which would suggest the only way a car can be enjoyable (or not disappointing) to drive is by handling really well.

Vehicles I have enjoyed driving (for various reasons other than handling prowess or performance) but perhaps shouldn't have include a Nissan Serena 2.3d, Daihatsu Move (850cc n/a 3 pot, 3sp t/c auto), Vauxhall Midi van (with a column change manual), Suzuki ST90 panel van, Daihatsu Sirion (1.0), my recently departed Piaggio Porter. Plus various buses, including one town service bus which was pitifully slow in accelerating but made late town service more interesting because of the challenge in keeping to time.

If pushed, i'd say my first car, a 1977 Fiesta 1.1, was a disappointment, as was my third, a 1978 Opel Ascona 1.9, but that was more to do with the fact that I shouldn't have bought either due to the exceptionally poor condition they were in.

Actually, one other has just came to mind, 4th gen Golf V6 4Motion. Too softly sprung to be fun to drive and no apparent (in the dry at least) benefits to being 4wd, notchy manual shift and no auto option (if memory serves). As a cruiser, the V5 was better (made a nicer noise and could be had as an auto) and for a twisty road (accepting no 4th gen Golfs were that great), the lighter (especially in the nose) 1.8 turbo was more fun.

Incidentally, i did also have a Capri (1.6 Laser) and loved it!.

Having worked at a Vauxhall dealer previously, I can’t think of anything worse than the Sintra model .

I worked at a car and van hire company (same place as had the Serena), and I do remember us getting a Sintra. Can't remember much about it though, which suggests i thought it neither bad nor good!.

The Serena I remember because I liked how high up you sat (essentially on top of the engine), its compact dimensions and the low speed tractability of the n/a 2.3 diesel.

Two cars I had test drives in which were terrible. A Honda Civic hybrid which to reduce weight felt like it was built of recycled drink cans and papier mache.

A BMW 3 series GT. If it hadn't taken so long to get out of the lot I would have not bothered driving it. The ergonomics were terrible, the seat adjustment mechanism was poor, I couldn't sit in the seat and adjust it. I also couldn't see all the dash as the steering wheel was in the way.

My wife once opted for a first generation Hyundai i20 which she hated after a few weeks.

I also had an older colleague and we wpuld chat cars and go on dealer test drive days. He bought a Rover 75 1.8 he let me have a drive of and it wasn't the best. He didn't keep it long and swapped it for a Jag.

'Disappointment' will obviously depend mostly on personal circs. Neither my family or my then-GF's (now wife's) family was car-oriented, so in the early 60s we stuck to British cars, as many did then. Mum had a then-novel 1100, so when we married and went to Canada we got a s/h one which the seller had bought for rallying or ice-racing (FWD). Got two others after return to UK - don't recall being 'disappointed' with them ,but had I been a boy-racer type I might have been.

There followed a Triumph 1300, five Maxis (good family car, never had a duff one), a Cavalier estate and a Nissan Prairie (kids were now students, needing stuff taken to uni), By then the 205 had stolen the limelight and the addiction has stayed with me.

The closest disappointments were a 206 Garros with impossibly uncomfortable seats, and a test drive in a Maestro after the run of Maxis ended. I may have been lucky never to have owned any car deserving to be called a lemon. And I certainly now keep cars a LOT longer than before !

Yeah, I've had a few of those, three which spring to mind were a Renault 30, an Opel Monza, and and a LHD ex German Military Police(!) Ford Granda :-)

Triumph TR7 - my first new car after a catalogue of bangers.

No comparison to the 10 year old MGBs, Triumph Haralds, For Anglias etc which preceded it - much faster, better equipped, more comfortable etc.

The disappointment was build quality - dire. Rust was bubbling through the sill/rear wing join before it was 3 years old.

For me it was a 2019 BMW M140i

I used to do personal leases and ordered a Golf R but when WLTP went mad, they delayed the delivery date indefinitely

Leasing agent offered me the BMW on a cheap lease as it was the last of the shape.

On paper, it was great. 340hp, RWD, 8 Spd auto with a 0 - 60 of 4.6s, but it was basically undriveable in the wet. Setting off at roundabouts was horrible as the 8 Spd ZF gearbox took ages to build up torque. Also the suspension crashed and banged and the steering got knocked out of alignment on minor potholes.

Strangely I have now a 125D of the same vintage with a manual gearbox and it's a joy to drive!

Cars i owned i wish i hadn't.

Ford Zephyr mk4, Austin 2200 Landcrab, Rover 2300 SD1, Mitsubishi Outlander 1.

These all pale into rose tinted appreciation of simpler days with the bings and bongs and nannying of anything very new.

I had the displeasure of another brand new artic tractor unit today, different make to my usual steed, you can never find a 12 year old child when you need one to help sort through all the menus via the touch screens and endless buttons and rockers on the steering wheel at 4am, for the entire journey the only display on the screen was digital speed in kms with tiny mph reading underneath barely visiible, no idea of fuel or adblu levels temps etc, no idea of what gear it was in no odometer no rev counter...steering? my mate once described the type of car transporter we used to drive when fitted with new drive axle tyres like 'driving a plate of spaguetti', well that describes todays adverture to a T, glad to see the back of it and so very glad my full time on the road is coming to an end.

Hopefully mine will be back on the road on Saturday after suffering major mechanical failure, is nothing made to last these days.

Harvest Gold 1973 Mini Clubman. Totally unreliable, shocking brakes, rattles everywhere, should have bought the basic model.
Upgraded to a basic Renault 4-wonderful piece of kit for someone on £2000 a year salary and a £8k mortgage

We had a wee blue Renault 4 GTL Van back in 1981. Great wee van it was too, and bizarrely cheaper to buy than a new Mini Van.
