Yet insurance premiuns generally are down on last years by about 15%

Just did the home insurance. was LV but premium nearly doubled, so went online, 5***** policy online £80 less. We don't auto-renew but LV phoned and misunderstood that I said it was £18 less.. we'll match that.. No it's £80...

Insurance is still a very competitive market.

I'm just going through the annual insurance quote game. Current insurer GA think I'll happily sign up to a 50% increase in price. I won't.

Aviva are happy to quote at less than I paid last year with GA, so they may well get my business.

For those unaware GA are a brand of Aviva.

Your GA figures are very close to mine. £449 last year, renewal £670.

Aviva quoting £450

Direct Line quote was similar, which is unusual as they are often an outlier.

The saga has lasted all week, I've been quoted over 2K, I got a renewal for just under £700 and looking around for cheaper didn't come off this time. Understandably really as I had my car stolen. What are other people paying? mine's an Merc E class cabriolet from 2016. The old V70 from 2008 cost £404 last time.

Old insurer wanted £100 more. After some searching on the web, renewed with a different (but well known) insurer for £100 less compared to last year's!

I’m £385 with Aviva on the ID3. SWMBO’s bump for bump claim has put it up a bit, but was expecting worse.

What surprises me is that for most people price is the bottom line when choosing insurance .

But looking at the Which report on car insurance highlights the vast difference between customer experiences when making a claim or seeking assistance.

LV Allianz and NFU usually top the chart and DL somewhere further down depending on which level of cover you choose.

So in my case the piece of mind that choosing a company that regularly gets good ratings from policy holders seems worth the extra cost .

But if like Orb you've got 9+ years NCB, what's the chance of needing a company with good ratings?

Insurance is mandatory and most never need to claim. You won't know how good is your insurer until you claim. But if you don't claim, then you paid for perceived better service which you never availed.

By law, all insurers need to provide some basic service anyway. So to a good extent, choosing one purely based on price is a logical approach.

I'm currently looking around as my renewal is due later this month.

I have been on the various comparison websites & some of the prices quoted from the big name companies do look tempting until you look at the compulsory excess they would want if you made a claim.

I have also noticed a couple of the big name insurance companies now insist that you call them up for a quote & don't offer an online quote system.

Our renewals were in January, both with DL.

I'm 69 still in full time work, wifey retired.

They'd increased the premium on my 20 year old Landcruiser by about £80 but after consulting MSE comparison site and phoning DL renewals we got that down to under £300, comp protected umpteen years ncd.

Saga renewal on wifeys 17 year old Forester 2.5T was much higher, saga wouldn't come down anything like considerable, asked DL to quote whilst on the phone to them and without physically checking that was about £300 might be a fraction over, a decent saving on saga's quote so insured that with them there and then.

I've found DL's phone centre staff to be friendly understandable and competent, that's one of the reasons we stay with them, i also renew there and then so the person concerned gets the retaining commission, how they'll be if there's ever a claim no idea, NFU were brilliant but priced themselves out of my wallet sadly.

One thing i've tried not to do is claim on windscreens, have paid privately for several screen replacements over the years using a small local firm the trade used, its surprising just how cheap screens can be if you avoid the national chains...whether the lack of screen claims has helped keep our premiums low i don't know but it can't have hurt.

My leased 500e is going back in December. Someone will get a neat little car with 11k on it in 4years. My insurance happens to run out mid November. So I'm thinking of using Cuvva to buy short term ins till its picked up. Seems easier than buying 12m then cancelling in a fortnight. Anyone used them before? I did a quick quote it'll be about 50quid.

Of course it is - [a] you have to have it and [b] you won't need to claim this year anyway !

Last year I had my car stolen by thieves who broke into the house when we were on holiday. LV were brilliant, they paid out very quickly enabling me to get a similar car on the road within ten days. All considered my renewal with LV of £690 after they paid out £14,000 is very reasonable. My highest quote on the net was over 2K.
