Cars still in use in the 70's often still had starter motors with Bendix drive engagement, if i remember correctly once the engine had started the Bendix drive would usually get chucked out of the starter ring leaving the starter motor spinning pointlessly, but short of causing a bit of wear to the bendix or starter ring teeth the amount of current an old type starter motor consumed if it continued to run would faltten the battery faster than an alternator could keep up with, so this scenario would have been unlikely...though i would have thought there would have been some horrible noises in the case being discussed here, simply switching off should have stopped the danger.
Anecdotally decades ago i put (bodged) together a go kart for my kids utilising a starter motor for power, the thing went like hell for about 3 minutes before the car battery was fully drained.
Also anecdotally anyone remember trying to replace a broken Bendix spring if you didn't have the correct compressor, (still got one somewhere) you'd end up with screwdrivers driven up your finger nails and/or other pains when your multiple mole grips slipped, a Bendix spring always broke at the most inopportune moments, nothing changes...happy days.
