Dacia Sandero Stepway 2018 - Car catches fire due to faulty ignition switch - Steveieb

Report in yesterday’s Times about a fire in a Dacia possibly caused by a faulty ignition switch which was the subject of a recall.

But a lack of a spare switch and the dealer allegedly ordering the wrong part could have resulted in the starter motor continuing to spin causing all sorts of electrical warning lights to come on an then the car bursting into fire.

The family are now trying to establish responsibility and secure a replacement car and the cost of the damage to their house and neighbours car.

Thanks for posting this ORB but in the case in the Times, the family returned the car to the dealers who then ordered the wrong part and left them to continue using the car.

Maybe the new ignition key can be ordered direct from Hella rather than going the main dealer route.

We had the same problem with a VW air cooled crew bus in the seventies but it resulted in only the starter motor destroying itself , maybe because the car had basic electrics ?

Cars still in use in the 70's often still had starter motors with Bendix drive engagement, if i remember correctly once the engine had started the Bendix drive would usually get chucked out of the starter ring leaving the starter motor spinning pointlessly, but short of causing a bit of wear to the bendix or starter ring teeth the amount of current an old type starter motor consumed if it continued to run would faltten the battery faster than an alternator could keep up with, so this scenario would have been unlikely...though i would have thought there would have been some horrible noises in the case being discussed here, simply switching off should have stopped the danger.

Anecdotally decades ago i put (bodged) together a go kart for my kids utilising a starter motor for power, the thing went like hell for about 3 minutes before the car battery was fully drained.

Also anecdotally anyone remember trying to replace a broken Bendix spring if you didn't have the correct compressor, (still got one somewhere) you'd end up with screwdrivers driven up your finger nails and/or other pains when your multiple mole grips slipped, a Bendix spring always broke at the most inopportune moments, nothing changes...happy days.

IIRC when the engine fired, the starter ring 'overtook' the pinion which kicked it out of engagement. The driver would release the key and the starter would stop. I never heard of any motors which kept running - why, unless there was a wiring fault ?

You could keep the starter running by holding the key in the start position but as you rightly describe the drive would be thrown out so would ust spin, i'm sure we've all heard the raucous sound when people didn't release the starter button quickly enough or the bendix drive itself not turning cleanly.

Memory time Andrew, was it best to lightly oil the bendix drive or leave it dry, i used a light oiling to stop rust form forming on the screw, also do we remember just how large those old starter motors were, the modern starter even on large high compression Diesel engines are half the size.

With a load on the motor - be it starting an engine or powering a go cart - I would expect the battery to be exhausted fairly quickly.

Those of us owning old bangers in the 1970s no doubt remember cold damp mornings where a couple of minutes of starter churning would leave the battery just about flat. Wait 30 mins and one could try briefly again.

Without any load I suspect the starter would run much faster and longer before depleting the battery - more likely to result in bearings overheating - possibly lots of noise before eventually failing.

In the case in question the car showed up multiple warning lights on the dashboard and various electrical items failed to work .

But the family managed to escape before the car set alight after a short journey to the supermarket.

Maybe there will be a DVLA recall on this potential fault? But lack of availability of parts combined with the delay in ordering the wrong part may have contributed to this !

You've got me there, GB, I never had any need to tinker with s starter, but I would guess a light oil would be good. I guess a modern need for a compact starter might be to release underbonnet space for something less important ?

Speaking of light oil, we have an elderly 1,2,3kW fan heater which was bought for our new home in 1967-68. Still going strong, but when the cylindrical fan starts to rattle a bit, a drop or two of SWMBO's sewing-machine oil on the bearings quietens it for another year or two ...

I thought the argument against oiling them was if they were oiled, clutch dust would stick to the oil and stop them working properly.

Bendix spring compressor. Saw one of them in a box of miscellaneous tools. I knew I'd seen one before, but blowed if I could remember what they were for.

That Dacia recall is so old it's got grey whiskers on it.

Strange that the car was not recalled for a retro fit of a new switch and when the car was taken to the dealer the part was on back order and when it did arrive the wrong one was ordered and the owner continued to drive the car until it burst into flames !

But thanks for the research!
