I'm in the process of buying a second hand car privately.
I've been looking into getting a warranty but have heard various bad things said about companies not wanting to pay out when you make a claim.

Has anyone any experience with these, good or bad.

cheers

5 years ago I bought a used 5 year old Nissan Micro from a dealer. Not a good buy as they were only designed to last 7 about years before falling apart. But it did include a one year warranty which covered a replacement speedo and a replacement wotsit in the back wheel suspension. I don't think I would bother with a warranty. I would go for a car with a good reputation and check it over before hand (or pay a little for the AA to check it, or even better slip a knowledgeable mate a few notes to check it). Checking the history helps avoid a clocked car.

Same here.....don't bother.

Half the time (In My Experience...) the component that has failed is not covered......

Buy wisely and you should be alright.

Just my two cents!

Just so, Leif. Only bother with a warranty if you can't trust yourself or a friend to decide whether a car is worth buying. The cover can be patchy and may well skate round any expensive or arguable failures. You may even be able to find a dealer who will drop his price if you buy without warranty, but not very often these days I think.

better to spend your money on usedcarchecks on the left.

You would be best advised to check out the co that supply`s the warranty. And read the small print ie there are garage`s that will make a repair say it is under warranty then say other bit`s were needed to finish the job which is not covered by warranty.May not be expensive but addition`s you don`t expect and on the other hand could be very expensive.Ps I doubt you will find a private seller that can offer a warranty.I know you did not say so.But often you find dealer`s that advertise as private are dealers and will offer a warranty I gather the going rate is around £100 some good some bad.small print count`s.Beware

Nope, not worth it. I recently took this decision on my Citroen XM.

Most companies' definition of "breakdown" means the car actually ceasing to work due to total component failure.

"Wear and tear" and "not actually a failure in our opinion" are the great escape clauses.

And read those exclusions..!!

I've just bought one with Warranty Direct, to go with my new Escort, as i seem to be able to break cars with astounding ease. The Warranty Direct one covers wear and tear parts aswell, and includes what i would consider to be the the majority of expensive failures. However i am yet to test it and so may post results at a later date!

On the experience of a friend who bought warranties on two of his cars I would leave well alone unless the garage who sold you the car did the work of contacting the insurer and arranging to repair.
His first one with one of the big breakdown companies cost him a fortune in phone calls listening to music.
He never did get through and gave up to have it repaired himself.
Not having learned his lesson he took another extended one with the manufacturer of his car. With this one he received no help from the main dealer who sold him the car (and warranty) when he needed them and had to insist that an engineer from the manufacturer meet him on site to argue the case. The warranty stated plainly that he was covered for this particular fault but they tried to persuade him that it didnt actually say that.

mech1,

A question if I may.

Every word in your post ending in 's' i.e. supply`s - garage`s -- bit`s - addition`s - dealer`s - count`s has a symbol before the last letter; as does 'don`t.'

It is not an apostrophe - that looks like this (grammar's or 'help')

How do you do this?

Just curious.

Mech1 has already explained his poor spelling and grammar over in Tech Matters.

www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?v=e&t=18...4

Several people, (myself included), have previously hinted to him before he explained things that maybe he should drop the use of the apostrophe altogether; but if he chooses to continue with it, then that is his prerogative. Remember, none of us are perfect.

Mech1 offers advice to people who have mechanical problems over in Technical Matters, and for that I'm sure a lot of people that he has helped are extremely grateful, regardless of whether or not there are apostrophe's present in the reply.

DD,
You have got it wrong! I was not trying to have a go at him and I do not need to be lectured.

I simply wondered what the symbol was - as it is not an apostrophe. Perhaps you should read my post and not publish your interpretation of what I said.

I assume your post is in your role as a moderater?

C
Warranties - Worth It? - Dynamic Dave
Cardew,

Yes, my post was that of a moderator, but for once I forgot to include my signature indicating so.

I wasn't having a pop at you as such, sorry if you thought that I was lecturing you - I wasn't.

I was simply trying to clear up the matter of people beginning to comment more frequently on mech1 and his use of an apostrophe in his posts. I'm sure he doesn't want us to dwell on this more than we already have done?

As regard to the symbol used, I think it's actually on the key left of the number one and above the tab key on the keyboard, rather than the key that also shares the @ symbol.

Thanks DD sorry Cardew it was a miss hit on the keyboard at the time.I think time I refrained from posting. It seems to cause more problems than it is worth or for me anyway embarrasement. It has been mentioned spelling not too good.grammer as well.cant all be perfect.

Dont be sorry Mech you are an asset to the site and who cares if your spelling isnt good. There are many like that...
When I worked in another life.. my collegue who sat oppposite me couldnt spell to save his life. Yet he was the best draughtsman, artist and had the finest handwriting I have ever seen.
As he was working every five minutes he would ask how do you spell..... He even mispelt the retiring Governors name on the decorative invitation cards which he had printed.
keep posting...

>you are an asset to the site and who cares if your spelling isnt good. There are many like that...<

One of my valued engineer colleagues was an execrable speller. Eventually the chief engineer told him that he must check all of his spellings in a dictionary before submitting his reports. He were very disheartened because, as he said to me, "How can I check with a dictionary when I can't spell the words?"
Warranties - Worth It? - Civic8
Thanks for that. But I think as HJ/No Dosh/DD would say it is straying from subject.I am not here to interfere with the original question.I am only here to help where possible. But thank`s again.

mech1 - others have commented on your tech.contributions. As one who has remarked on your 'apostrophes' before, I would say your spelling is actually quite good, and nothing to apologise for. Like Cardew I was just puzzled as to where those `` things were coming from.

People often dash off Emails without checking the screen anyway, and as long as there aren't so many errors that the result is confusing/ambiguous, no-one minds.

Well that's a fairly resounding 'no' to an aftermaket warranty.

Like Hawsey1982, i've been tempted to try Warranty Direct, i guess if the cover isn't too expensive then it could be worth the risk???

Also it would help reselling the car (privately).
Warranties - Worth It? - Civic8
As a matter of interest is the company similar to warranty holdings or may be same co.?
Warranties - Worth It? - Hawesy1982
Erm im not sure mech1, but i took mine out on the basis that i didnt want surprise bills for £100's, and it seems to be the only warranty recommended by HJ himself. Click the link on the left sidebar to find out more

I got a free Warranty Holdings warranty during the haggling process for my Golf mk3 Driver about 2 years ago. I had the following replaced under this warranty in the first 2 months of ownership:

Clutch Bearings
Gearbox Bearings
Rack and pinion
Water Pump

This probably saved me an arm and a leg, however when I tried claiming for a wheel bearing at about month 11 they refused to pay because my 6 month service did not have a parts and VAT breakdown (done by hometune and had all the checklist and price and VAT reg number).

To summarise it helped me out a lot and had I of paid for it it would have been worth it, but they will try and wriggle out of things given the mere sniff of a chance. If I bought a car now I would probably purchase one (A Warranty Holdings one at least).
