I'm just about to opt out of Company Car and haven't had my own insurance for at least 10 years.
Anyone got ACTUAL experience on this subject - if so, who are YOU insured with and did they give you equivalent no-claims discount?
I've had no accidents or claims in that time - nearly half a million miles driven in 10 years.

I opted out of my company's scheme. However I had no claims entitlement from my own second car. I also had a bump in the company car.
Ask the insurance company if a letter from your fleet manager confirming the accident free record will result in a discount. They might not give you actual no claims bonus, but an 'introductory discount.'
I have found Norwich Union to be about the cheapest through most brokers and direct with them.
Kwik-Fit will haggle on price though, they even had a renewal quote that was very competetive. Norwich union direct were cheaper, I bought a policy from them, rang kwik fit to cancel and they immediately offered more money off. I stuck with NU in the end, but it just goes to show...

Not a personal experience, but my wife drove a car under Motability insurance for six years. When she opted to buy a car of her own she asked the company which insures Motability vehicles (More Than) for a quote. They were prepared to insure her as though she had been a customer for the previous six years. Try your current insurers - or try More Than. Actually, I suspect most insurance companies will offer you a good deal in order to attract your business if you speak to them nicely.

Ditto Longdriver...
...I came out of a 6 year period of company car lease and faced the prospect of having to insure a purchased car (VW Vento 1,8)with my own money and expected it to be an uphill battle to have any kind of NCB recognized.
I experienced no real problems and if you are able to provide written evidence of your time without claim, you shouldn't either.
(As you asked), I finally insured through Frizzell (Brokers) who use the London Victoria Ins co. whose quote was by far the most competitive given the elements which I felt that I needed in my insurance. I'm sure that you will raelise that the cheapest quote might not necessarily be the best in the event of claim.

I been a company car driver had 5 yrs no clams before been a CCD, and a further 3 yrs of CCD without accident had accident my fault then 2 yrs CCD.
So I ended up with 2 yrs no claims discount, and I found that Directline was very good value.

Company car driver from 88-03, opted out, got letter from fleet manager testifying to no claims since 88, got a very good quote from Churchill which I went ahead with (Churchill having been recommended by someone else on this site).

Had a company car 20 years - changed jobs. Went to Direct Line and they wanted a letter stating xxx years with no claims and statment that no longer driving company car. Got the full NCD no problem.

Yep me too, had a company car for 15 years and opted out, gave Direct Line a letter from my company stating no. of years with out an accident and the gave me a policy for business cover £200 less than the company were paying. When my car was in for bodywork I just phoned and they covered the loan car FOC.

In the same situation, esure were the only people I could find who allowed me to protect my NCB and credit me with actual NCB (i.e. can subsequently be transfered to another company) rather than just giving me a discount equivalent to n years NCB.

Until March this year when I opted out, I had been a company car driver for many years.
Insurance proved to be a doddle, even with the added complication in my case that I was personally importing a new car from the Netherlands, with the market finally having woken up to the fact that so many of us are now choosing to run our own cars.
Having obtained his permission first, I simply wrote a letter on company headed paper in the name of our fleet manager (to save his time and effort) stating the true facts, and then asked him to sign it.
This was accepted by my insurer without question, the only restriction being that they wouldn't recognize more than five years' NCB entitlement. The premium was perfectly acceptable to me however, so I was (and am) happy.

I found some difficulty finding an insurance company who would take account of a clean 8 year company car record. Np problem with Direct Line though - and they were the cheapest I could find for the cover I wanted.

Thanks for your comments backroomers.
I've just bought an imported (EEC) Galaxy Ghia Tdi for early September from Motorpoint for £18k and will let you know how I get on with the insurance, as I've got letters from my employers from the last 11 years confriming my driving record...

Hi,
I came out of a company scheme at the end of 2001 after having a company car since 1977 (you're right, I don't look old enough!!).
The company's insurers did a 'search' and produced a letter confirming my clean claims record going up to 5 years ago. I insured with Privilege (very good and very competitive for clean records and middle aged drivers). Get the letter quick though as thy don' hang around chasing for proof of NCD.
Best deision I made for a long time not giving the tax man a big wedge every month. And I'll have an asset of my own when everyone else is handing the keys back in a couple of years time.
Good luck.
