I would say its too late. When the oil light came on, that meant no oil pressure and you should have stopped the engine immediately. Driving for even a minute after this would mean the internals of the engine were wearing metal to metal and massive internal damage.

Never drive a car that has oil "off the dipstick", unless you can afford to buy and fit a new engine.

The oil light is a pressure warning and not an oil level warning.

Did you check the oil when you bought the car?

I would have assumed the white smoke was caused by putting to much oil in?

1.8 Nissan engine famous for using oil.

I would check it regularly if the engine has survived the no oil event.

Had a 1.8 tino for 5 years, fabulous car, not a bit of bother and didn't use a drop of oil. Very underrated car.

Apart from replacing the engine or having a major rebuild all you can do now is ensure that you check the oil regularly, (maybe even daily?) and ensure it is at the Max mark before every trip. Replacing oil will be cheaper than a new engine.

Only trouble for the future will be the MOT emissions test. It may fail and that means replacing the engine to get it to pass.

I would sell the car a few months before the MOT and hand the problem to the next owner as without the MOT it will be worth next to nothing.
