It might just have a juddery clutch - it does happen, and can be a symptom of wear, contamination or, heaven forfend, an iffy DMF if the car has one. It doesn't necessarily mean failure is imminent though. I've had a couple of cars that were prone to clutch judder, but I've never actually had to replace a clutch in 40 years of driving.
I agree with the previous answer actually - if you have a tame mechanic, get him (or her) to check it out for you by trying it.
Clutches on used cars are always a lottery - some people can wear them out in no time. There's a gent near here with a Fiesta, only does 2000-3000 miles a year, and has a new clutch at at least every other service!
