If I rent a car from Dusseldorf Airport and wish to drive into Holland

Is there any reason why I can't do this?

Maybe you can't drive?

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to do this - but it's not up to me or anybody else on here.

Why don't you ask the hirer of the car to authorise this trip?

When collecting a hire Golf at Munich airport about 12 years ago, was given and had to sign a map showing where I could and couldn't drive into. The expected exclusions were the former Yugoslavian States , plus interestingly Italy in anything from a Golf upwards.

As others say the only definitive answer is in the hire documentation.

I suspect however that in the Schengen area, at least reasonably near frontiers, it's accepted that crossing from one country to another is no bigger job than England to Wales or even Yorkshire to Lancashire.

Large numbers of people working for UN etc in Geneva seem to live in France. Similalry, while camping on French side of the Rhine near Neuf Breisach it was utterly seamless to cross to (German) Breisach to shop for bits/bobs.

The cultural/linguistic/branding change however whether Ratthaus instead of Mairie, roadsigns, shops/banks or Sunday opening is instantaneuos,

Thanks. A couple of years ago I drove seamlessly between France and Switzerland sontrust it is the same here. I have not yet rented a car so cannot read any documentation to see if I can do what I want to do.

Unlike the UK the rest of the EU is seamless you will have no problems.

In the past it has not been permitted to drive a "High Value" hire car into Italy - Mercs Beemers etc. This is probbably still the case, it is a value/insurance/ risk of theft aspect. Mots of us would probably be in a VW or Open and it would not apply.

Whatever you do, make sure you add the excess waiver, and photograph and document any marks however small on the car for evidence, particularly check lower bumper/spoiler scuffs.

You have been warned!

Whetever you do, do NOT buy the hire comapany's Insurance without finding out what it costs before you get to the rental desk and check out people like insurance4hirecar .com who sell it way less than Hertz, Avis ect who see it as another money making scheme. Also try to avoid rentals based on "We give you a full tank of fuel which you pay for and bring it back empty" A nother money making effort

Its the EU not America the rules on insurance apply in any EU country,

What I forgot to say is that make sure the car is foll of fuel befor you get into the Nederland as the cost of fuel is far more expensive than Germany.

Most major rental companies allow cross border travel in Europe. As others have said and especially if you hire regularly an excess insurance policy is worth taking out. During the great ash cloud disaster a few years ago I hired with Hertz in Milan and dropped off in Paris, no problems with borders but a huge one way premium for leaving an Italian registered car in France!!

Thanks all.

I already have annual car rental excess insurance and will only be renting for less than 24 hours. Child #2 in camp in Holland, but nearest airport is Dusseldorf. Need to collect him as the rest of the family will be in Venice and it is easier to collect him than have him return to the UK and then fly out the next day.

Any recommendations for renting from Venice and droppnig off in Pisa? Presumably have to be one of the larger companies?

I would hire from one of the large companies, you know who you are dealing with.

When you hire from brokers such as Holiday autos or Argus you do not know which firm you are getting until you have paid.

I hired a car from Argus in Porto, it had done over 60,000 kms and was filthy. I had to clean the screen before my trip. The depot was not at the airport terminal, I had to wait for over an hour before the bus came. I would have abandened them except they had my credit card number.

Holiday autos sent me a discount code ,so I booked with them for my coming trip to Sicily. When I found out the name of the rental company I googled them. What a rotten shower they seemed to be, I cancelled straight away and booked with Enterprise. I hope they are OK.

Several years ago I had to pay an additional premium to take the car out of the country I hired it in (spain). Unhelpfully I can't remember the company I used.

Typical airport budget car hire scam. The airport was Gerona-right on the border with France!

You can rent a car in any city to any place. If you have an access to the Internet, of course. I always use this free app (deleted) in such cases. It shows where are the closest rent services and their prices so you should check it out.

Is this the one you are advertsing in the General Chat section? :-)

Pleased that I have never had a Hertz car in the EU;when I have gone to collect my car(usually Europcar)the Hertz queue usually goes halfway round the airport.

I started the thread but did not tell you how i got on. Booked through Avis and collected a nice upgrade Citroën DS3 Cabriolet instead of the cheapest car on the list. Told them i was going into Holland and they were completely fine about it. Lovely little car and made my son's day when i picked him up from the camp.

In Venice we collected what was meant to be a Ford C-Max. Instead it was a Fiat 500 L +. Like the 500 MPW FAMILY they have here but without the third row of seats. I was sceptical about getting all the luggage in, but it all fitted and we were very impressed by the comfort and performance of the car and its diesel engine. We used Hertz and they were fine also.
