I am seriously considering taking early retirement. I've heard that car insurance can increase significantly when you retire. Can anyone recommend any insurers that have reasonable rates for retired folks? (I am currently with Direct Line).

I took early retirement at the age of 54 in 2011. Our insurance with LV didn't change, and they are a Which? recommended provider for car insurance. Obviously it does depend on individual circumstances.

I took early retirement at the age of 53 in 2005 - can anyone trump that? ...

... I don't recall there being additions/deletions/loadings or otherwise to any of my three policies at the time (which were probably with a mix of the AA, Aviva and Tesco?), then again, I can't recall what I've had for breakfast these days!

I'm retired and with Saga - although I understand many don't find them competitive. My last renewal came in at under £125, fully comp, £200 excess, 9 year NCB.

When I retired my UK insurance (Aviva) went down for the retirement and went down again when I removed travelling to from a work place a total of 30%.My German insurance went down by 55%.

Very valid point - the removal of 'regular commuting' should help reduce your premiums (considerably?) at the next renewal. If they don't then vote with your feet ...

... I don't believe I informed my insurer(s) of my retirement mid-term but waited until my policies expired naturally then rolled my sleeves up and sought out the best deals.

I can equal it having taken Voluntary Redundancy by unreduced early pension at 53 yrs 11 months in November 2013. My friend and colleague Angela took same deal just after 50 but will wait to 55 for full pension entitlement.

Premium for my 2005/05 Beringo 1.9D was unchanged but is distorted by fact that offspring aged 19(M) and 21(F) are permitted drivers.

I retired in 1999 at 51..

I obtained a statement from my employers that I had had a company car for x years with no claims.

When I bought my own car , I obtained full NCB credit for those year - 9 iirc..

Logically premiums should go down as retired people will probably do fewer miles and are less liekly to travel during the rush hour. Any insurer putting up premiums on retirement is slavishly following a stupid computer and deserves to lose your business.

Hi I took early retirement and gave up a company car and took out insurance with LV. Base premium fully comp was about £160 for a 1.8 Civic. Also allows my wife to commute to place of work and no extra charge for a no fault claim on the company car in the previous year. A good deal I thought and cheaper than taking out a new policy with More Than who are my wife's insurers. A pity as they've been good to deal with over the years.

I was made redundant when I was 36, part of the package (in addition to the payout) was full pension rights at 50 fully index linked.

Now several years past 50 and the monthly cheque is very nice (and probably just enough to live on) but still work part time to pay for lifes little luxuries. When I finally fully retire I would hope to get a good discount as my annual mileage will drop and I will not be commuting at the worst times of the day.

I escaped at 51 in 2001 and found insurance didn't change at all. Currently £120-something with SAGA for the car and Carole Nash for the bikes.

Added little brother to the car policy so he can take it into town for servicing and it went down £1.60
