insurance - no claims discount - Gavin Rees

I have beeen living in Italy for the last seven/eight years and am moving back to the uk next month. The problem is I am unable to locate or even remember the name of the motor insurance company that I last had in the UK and for which I had full/ max no claims discount (NCD). My fear is that I will need to start from the beginning and therefore pay a very high premium.

Whilst in Italy, our family car has been isured in my wife's name so there is no NCD to transfer over.

Do insurers keep details of NCD even if not with the same insurer (checked by driver name perhaps)?

Any suggestions/advice welcome

Ask your wife's insurance company to write a letter saying that you drove this vehicle for xxx years without a claim, then go to a decent broker, or (NFU)

For me NFU accepted a letter from my swiss employer when i returned to the uk.

I was under the assumption you lost ncd after 3 years of being named driver on someone elses policy?

The above poster is right. If you don't insure a car for 3 years, you loose all your NCB.

Sorry mate but you will have to start at the bottom again. The only way,as previously mentioned,is to get a letter from your wife's insurer saying that you haven't had an accident for 'X' amount of years. Then find an insurer who will give you some sort of discount based on the letter.

You don't say how old you are? Once your over 30 the insurance companies look favourably on you.

that is not true anymore.

One of my collegues is 32, has been driving for over 10 years as a named driver but without any accidents.

He cant get any car insured for under £1,700 to a inner city address in Glasgow.

Didn't a recent poster of similar age and with years of NCD say he'd been quoted £3000+ because he lived in Bradford? Glasgow must be a lower risk.

i'm 44 so guess every cloud has a sliver lining in respect that premiums might cost a bit less. I will try and get a letter from my wife's italian insurer (with translation) and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the feedback.

PS-earlier link mentioned NFU, excuse my ignorance what is NFU its not the National Farming Union is it?
