VW BMW and MB - ACC Thefts - Steveieb

Thefts of these control units have been rising especially in London.

They are then resold on auction sites etc for a fraction of their replacement cost but still need programming at the main dealer .

Reminds me of the Beastie Boys and thefts of badges from VW. S but at least the dealers replaced the badges free of charge.

How long have these units being fitted to VW BMW and MB which are mainly affected and why aren’t other makes being targeted like Tesla ?

Are we talking about the RADAR/LIDAR units that control the Active Cruise Control?
VW BMW and MB - ACC Thefts - Steveieb

Yes

And how can the thefts be prevented if possible ?

VW BMW and MB - ACC Thefts - Xileno

There will be a bigger market for the German makes as these units are fitted to both ICE and EV whereas Tesla are only EV. Whether the ACC units are the same across different ICE v EV vehicles I don't know.

Tesla doesn't have a radar that I am aware of.

.

It becomes self-perpetuating: Radar gets stolen, owner asks dealer for a quote which is thousands, owner buys replacement on eBay. Possibly these manufacturers are fleecing customers for more than others when it comes to replacement.

Not that well up on Tesla. Is ACC based on optical cameras?
VW BMW and MB - ACC Thefts - pd

Yes, Tesla uses cameras for everything as far as I am aware - there isn't even a rain sensor and on recent models they dropped the physical parking sensors as well.

Stealing expensive parts from cars isn't new - BMW iDrives have been "popular" for a long while.

Jaguar XJ40 bumpers were popular back in the day due to their high cost. Many owners had the bolts welded.

Had to tack weld the replacement set of spotlights to my first Landcruiser, some waste of oxygen minced off with the Hellas which were previously sited...hmm not sure now did i tack weld or make the thread unworkable in some other way?

Anything and everything gets stolen these days. Car parts are becoming so expensive, it’s cheaper to go and steal the bits you need from a vehicle sitting on the road . My friend had the whole front end stolen from his transit custom . Bumper, lights, front panel , parking sensors and bonnet. My local Porsche dealer has 24 hour security on their forecourt as the headlights on most models are easily removed.,

Airbags on Hondas in the USA was a Nationwide Problem
Replacements were in short supply from Honda and the key source of replacemensts were the ones stolen from cars a few weeks before.

Solved by putting serial numbers on the airbags.

Ah - does that explain the following from Prof Google?.....

"In the UK, it's estimated that around 5% of the adult male prison population and 7% of the adult female population are Irish Traveller or Gypsy. This is despite the fact that they make up a very small percentage (estimated at around 0.1%) of the overall UK population."

No. It's not immediately apparent how you have linked airbag thefts in the US to the demographics of the UK prison population.

And a contentious issue that is best left out of the Backroom.

VW have provided ACC on the Golf for a few generations now, as standard fit on most models. It was once seen as a USP over their rivals.
They probably made the sums add up by designing an ACC system within the grill badge cam, as opposed to a cameras and sensors in an enlarged windscreen mirror housing. Probably an easier fitting process on the production line, and one that can be added to any model, in theory.

I thought the fig leaf for the programming of components was to prevent the use of stolen bits, and not at all to force repairers to use the dealer.

How then, if programming is required, is there still a market for these stolen bits?
