How to tax a vehicle with no V5C in my name - OceanMan

I bought a car from my brother recently, but all the documents including the V5C are still in his name because he only sent the documents to the DVLA earlier today... I have an insurance policy that starts at midnight tonight, and I want to drive immediately so I need to get it taxed before then.

Even though im the policy holder of the insurance, and it's my car, can I get the tax in his name for now? Would I be able to change it when all the documents in my name are received?

Sorry for asking a Googleable question, I haven't found any answers that way and as I said, want to get this done asap.

Edit to add the car Is SORN I believe, not currently taxed

He should have given you the portion of the V5C that is for the new owner. Didn't he give you that? If not then he should have done. This can be used by the new owner to tax the car.

You might be able to use a Car Tax Form in the Post Office.

No he has. My mistake was assuming that when the website says you "need a V5C" in your name you needed a full one returned from the DVLA. I didn't realize it meant just with my name written by myself
