Something to make me smile a bit..

I have a buy to let flat, and my tenants (who were 1. good tenants and 2. from the eastern part of europe) had a uk registered vehicle, which they had used to cross the Dart Bridge/tunnel twice over the space of a few days.

They recently moved out, and before doing so, i advised them to do a post office redirection for their mail. as there were 4 of them they declined because of the cost for 4 people.

The other day I checked the flat before a new tenant moved in, lo and behold a letter for them which i was kind enough to walk around to their new address and put through the door.

They are aggrieved that they now have to pay £70 as the delay for the discounted payment has passed. Although I have some sympathy for them, I said it is not my responsibility to forward their mail especially as they did not return postage for myself and previous occupants.

I advised them to tell dvla of their change of address.. which would avoid future problems.

I read the article, so must have had signs of dementia since the age of 5.

My slighly unsubtle point was to remind everyone to update their dvla records, but i see your point.

By the way I am an approved landlord!

Brum, does it apply to you too?

Or is it too much port with the cheese on a sunday afternoon.

Re Dartcharge - Many people I know (from up t'north) have been hit with a fine as the only thing you see on the way to the chunnel is "'C' congestion charge look us up online" no telephone numbers, no price, no toll. Bit late when you are on the way out of the country for a couple of weeks

I personally was OK as I frequently drive this route

I have an account, topped up with a £10 now and again when needed, but i feel that the whole point of the fines is to raise more revenue for the admin side of things, as with the London congestion charge and others similiar.

Certainly southbound (and living in Essex I use it a bit)I have many times remarked the poor signage.

People tend not to see an information sign on such a busy bit of road, and if you happen to be passing a hgv as you pass the sign, you will miss it.

A nice overhead gantry flashing "Toll" pay online or phone would be nice, but never going to happen!

Not redirecting your mail is just false economy. A friend was allocated a council flat and when they moved in a neighbour said that any mail for the previous tenant should be passed to her and that she would pass it on. This worked for a short while but then the neighbour (who was over 90) was rushed into hospital and moved on through the care home system. Some friends who cleared the flat did not have the address of the previous tenant and said the old lady was to poorly to bother with this. So my friend had no choice but to return letters as "Address not known, moved to Xyz town". A few years later they did a council swap to be nearer their son and family. The person they swapped with was not short of a bob or two (near new car) but said just put on my new address on any letters and drop them in the postbox. Royal Mail quickly got wise to this and re-delivered to the original address. My friend then took them over at the weekend (no car and no public transport option after they finished work) and delivered them. The next day they got an abusive phone call saying because of the delay they had had to pay a late payment penalty!

Which was my original post which made me smile.

It is not the first time. I have had debt collectors and bailiffs knocking too!

Usually., no forwarding address is given.

As of now, it is "return to sender" "no longer at this address"

and no. I did not appreciate that it was my fault that i did not go daily to forward mail....

Dart Charge - Penalty - concrete

This drove us crackers for the first year or so in our new abode. The previous occupants could not be bothered to redirect their mail either. They were obviously lazy given the state of the house when we moved in. They were clearky strangers to any form of housework! Anyway the upshot is we got fed up of 'return to sender' only to have the sender send more mail. Frustrating. Especially when it involves banks and other official sources. So we statred to open the letters, some of which contained some very sensitive finacial and personal information which could have caused meyhem in the wrong hands. I wrote to several organisations informing them that post for Mr & Mrs So and So sent to this address would be charged at £10 per letter for returning plus £15 per hour of time for administering this service. Bingo. No more letters. It beggars belief that people can actually do this to themselves by not redirecting and also informing their bank etc of a change of address.

On the Dart Charge. I set up a continuing debit which they take whenever I use the crossing. It has worked a treat so far.

ditto, have "top up account"

I have now assisted them in paying the £100 fine for using a mobile, as well as 2 dart charges as they had ignored previous reminders and for the last time will go wih him to make sure he sends off his far eastern european driving licence to get points added for the phone offence, naturally special delivery.

After this they are on their own.

I have it too, they did charge me twice for the same crossing and dragged their feet on refunding it.

I never had a problem with the dart tags (apart from the company one when they hadn't paid)
