Using your mobile phone whilst driving - New penalty points system - Steveieb
Can someone explain the new rules which start in 2017 affecting drivers who use their phones whilst driving?
Does this only apply to drivers who physically hold a phone or are hands free exempt?

I have one of those clip on units which Bluetooth into my phone , which require you to dial up the number on the phone whilst stationary or taking a call on the move simply by pressing a button on the unit..

How do the rules apply ? As records will show that there is a record of the call if you are involved in an accident.

Your question indicates the difficulty of having a ban on some mobile phone functions not others, particularly now smart phones are common.

What should be banned - Apps, texts, hand-held or all ? IMO they all should have been banned from use by the driver from the moment they were invented.

Agreed, all mobile phone use by the driver should be banned while the car is moving - calls, texts, apps, twitting, farcebooking... No one is SO important that they have to be connected all of the time. Many think they are but it's just an irrational fear of not knowing 'something' linked to an overdose of insecurity.

And why don't we ban radios/ any music too, while you're at it ; (

Because drivers don't become obsessed with them in the same way they do with phones - the interaction with ICE is far less frequent.

I listened to a radio interview this week with someone from Brake. They want ALL mobile phone use in vehicles banned, even with a handsfree function.

They quoted some dubious research that alleges even talking via handsfree makes you as dangerous as a drunk driver.

They also said that talking to passengers is also a dangerous distraction.

So, expect a ban on talking to anyone - even your passengers!

So far as I can tell there's no change to the offence, just an increase in penalties.

Heard a radio advert earlier for the Mazda 2. They were plugging a feature where the car will read out Facebook posts. What on earth.....?

So does anyone seriously think swmbo will take any notice of that one?

Would be nice though.

Would possibly save me from hearing how many units of blood a patient lost, etc...

Its possible for the Mobile co's to cut off service to mobiles in cars, the problem is it would affect passengers too.

Listening to Music does not increase the distraction level, neither does talking to passengers. I do not use my mobile if I am driving.

The most distracting experience I've had recently was having a passenger (my boss) talking on his phone and asking me questions about the discussion. I actually asked him to end the call or take a taxi, no longer in his good books.

On the BBC Breakfast program this morning the announcer/compere said that the companies making mobile phones have the technology to detect whether the phone is moving when it's being used. It was suggested that if the phone was moving at more than 5 mph then the technology also exists to cut off the call. For some reason the suggestion went down ike a lead balloon. Any ideas ?

Not practical to stop passengers in cars, coaches and trains from using their mobiles.

It seems more appropriate to actually police this more rather than increase the penalities. The reason people seem to do it so much is they know they wont be caught. Six points seems highly inappropriate compared to other offences such as driving without insurance or a licence.

And what about people using their infotainment screen whilst driving?

Need to have a panel of experts, e.g police drivers decide what causes an avoidable distraction, e.g., use of mobile phone, decide rules and then enforce : all of them. Let's have more unmarked police cars. Punishments at a level to deter.

Off the thread but why should job need be looked as a hardship to avoid a ban. If job involves driving even more important to be safe.

Standards of driving are not taken seriously enough. It is not a right - it is a privilege which should only be kept by safe drivers. As someone who is no longer a younger driver, I am ready to stop driving the moment I feel, or am told by a qualified person, that I would present a risk on the road.

Why should you rely on being "told by a qualified person that you are a risk on the road"?

Join your local IAM group, take some training and assessments from their experienced people, maybe even take the advanced test and stay in control of your driving - you will be taught to assess your own driving on a continuous basis - you may even get to enjoy driving again.

Yes I am an IAM member of local group. I was not explicit enough in my post. My intention is taking annual testing after 70.

I will not leave it to chance. Sorry I did not make it clear enough.
