Hyundai i40 - Rear window shatterd - TopScot

Evening - Yesterday as I was driving out of my street I heard an almighty bang. It was my back window. The Glass completely shattered. Now, the glass was not hit by someone or something of that I am 100% certin of. Is their any reason the rear glass can do this?

Glass in cars is toughened in side/rear and laminated in windscreen - it's made by heating the glass slowly and cooling it quickly which can/does leave stresses within the glass - modern cars have the windows bonded in to strengthen the bodyshell - the stresses of use and/or weather changes can cause this, it's not common but it does happen.

Thanks for your reply. The guy at national windscreens told me the reason the glass shatterd was because I attached Christmas lights to the window and secured it with blue tack which coverd the heating elliments. When u out the heater on it popped out. Apparently he us seeing at least one a week! Lesson learnedand here for others to follow.

Yes, that could do it. Never put anything over heater elements (note that when dealers put their stickers over heater elements on the rear screen, the warranty from the supplier of that screen is immediately voided).
