Are there are downsides to buying a pre-reg car?

Are there any drawbacks to buying a pre-registered car?

It's a secondhand car so unless you take out return to invoice GAP insurance you won't get back what you paid for it in the event of a write off in the first year. Important also to get a full set of keys (if you don't, whoever has the unreturned key could steal the car). The car also needs to be registered to you and the 'keeper' immediately with no delay, not registered to some holding company for three months.
