Do you have to inform your insurer that you've attended a speed awareness course if they don't ask? I understand that the police have this information but are bound by the data protection act, so how can the insurance companies obtain the details if they have not asked?

If your insurer doesn't specifically ask, you don't have to declare it. If your insurer specifically asks, then you have to declare it. But at that point it's worth checking around to see if you can get a better rate from an insurer that doesn't ask you to declare it, remembering that declaring it could increase your premium by £100.
