Can you recommend an estate car for high mileages and long distances?

I currently own and drive a 1998 Audi A4 1.8. I am 23 with one child and due to get married next year. Being in the forces, I am doing a fair few miles each weekend to and from camp and the cost of petrol is very expensive, and after a recent £336 MOT bill I am feeling change is near. I am thinking of purchasing an estate and have a budget of around £8000 plus the A4 (which I know won't get much). I have looked at the Peugeot 407 SW and the Mazda 6 estate. After a recent chat with my MOT station I was advised against a French car. Age and pay affect insurance, tax and fuel economy. I would like a 2-litre as I feel driving to a new base in Germany may need that little bit more power.

There's not a lot wrong with a Mondeo 2.0TDCI wagon for £8000. You will get one from from a car supermarket.
